hello. i am looking for a new linux dev machine. i would like it to be free software and portable (pref 11 inches, but 13 is acceptable) and light (which may mean no thinkpads?) and am looking for suggestions. I'm interested in the xps 13, purism's librem, and system76.suggestion welcome and appreciated!

@0x3F Pretty happy with my XPS 13. Even though I can't speak for the current generation, the previous ones have full hardware support on Linux. Besides that, it's a lovely looking and well built machine.

@fribbledom @0x3F I'd second the recommendation for the XPS 13. I bought a refurbished one earlier this year and I've not had any issues with running Linux on it. It's nice and light, and the battery life is good on it too.

@0x3F I had thermal throttling issues with the XPS series. I'd suggest looking at the HP Spectre series. Everything on their 13in works right out of the box with a recent Linux kernel.

@gid @fribbledom @0x3F If I had the money I'd probably go for the XPS 13. I love my 13" Thinkpad (X230), but it is Heavy.

@0x3F i think the system76 is probably best in this space but the XPS is likely to be better build quality/hardware wise (you cannot beat the economies of scale difference). I've not yet tried the purism yet.

@0x3F I have an XPS 15 and love it. I don't know how the 13 compares, but if it's half as good as the 15 you will certainly not go wrong.

@fribbledom @0x3F I've considerred this machine specifically for Linux. If Apple continues to disappoint and I find Linux viable for the design work I do (maybe switch to Figma??) then I'd likely go this route. Main concern, does it have a high level CPU and good amount of RAM?
