@gamingonlinux Yeah, that seems to be what the exit surveys indicate. Patreon really screwed up this time it seems. lol

@switchingsocial The problem is not Patreon, Liberapay, SubscribeStar or any other similar platforms, but payment processors like PayPal. They're the ones which told Patreon to ban certain users, and they're the ones which pulled support for alternative platforms when they started taking users like Sargon of Akkad and others. @ChrisWere @gamingonlinux

@switchingsocial He definitely is, but being an asshole is not illegal yet. Taking away one's livelihood just because you have the power to do so should be, though.@ChrisWere @gamingonlinux

@switchingsocial I agree with you. Patreon is not a public utility (I didn't even say that), but payment processors like PayPal are a different matter. And while they may not form a monopoly, they certainly seem to work like a cartel. Remember what happened with WikiLeaks a few years ago.My point is that nobody should be able to refuse processing payments to anyone unless mandated by a judge, but that's what PayPal and maybe others are doing now.@ChrisWere @gamingonlinux

@switchingsocial@josemanuel @ChrisWereI agree that the current payment providers have way too much power. The problem with things like Liberapay as opposed to Patreon is they dump the whole sum on you whereas Patreon is monthly

@switchingsocial@josemanuel @ChrisWere @LiberapayNope. Mangopay chucked them out and now theyre using Stripe and they send you the entire payment as soon as someone makes it now.

@gamingonlinux @switchingsocial @josemanuel @ChrisWere Liberapay donors always had to pay multiple weeks/months in advance even with Mangopay, you just didn't realize it because as a recipient you only saw the weekly transfers between wallets.

@josemanuel If one's livelihood is based on their misogyny and racism, then it seems more than valid to revoke that.

@xirnaq Sargon's livelihood is based on making videos that some people, mostly conservative men, like and are willing to pay for. What he says in those videos may be controversial and you may not like it, but there's nothing illegal about it.I personally don't think he's misogynistic or racist (I don't know him nor follow his videos closely, though), but even if he were, those'd be his opinions, and I don't think anyone should be punished for their opinions, however unpopular or wrong.

@josemanuel I didn't say it was illegal nor do I think it should be, but I will support every private company doing whatever they can to keep him off the air. I think the "I wouldn't rape you" comment alone should make his misogyny clear, and I'm concerned that it seems to not.If he really wants his money, I'm certain he can find his own avenues, but no site has an obligation to keep him on.

@xirnaq That's what we're discussing, that some companies have too much power over other people's livelihoods, and they shouldn't. They should just let payments go through them seamlessly and agnostically. Now, if a judge ever said: β€œThis guy did something illegal. Company P, freeze his assets,” that'd make sense, but what you say you support has a name and it's anarcho-capitalism. (Ironically, pretty much what Sargon claims to support.)

@josemanuel I most definitely do not support capitalism, I just oppose Sargon even more than I oppose PayPal.And- in fact, allowing Sargon to get this money and spread his speech is itself allowing "anarcho-"capitalist ideas to spread, which is what I'm getting at. I oppose his ideas and thus will oppose him at every step.

@xirnaq So, in order to avoid spreading ancap ideas you're willing to give corporations powers that only judges should have in any sane democracy, effectively putting them above the law and erasing due process for everyone, including yourself? Can you see your own contradiction?

@Liberapay @gamingonlinux @switchingsocial @josemanuel @ChrisWere i feel like this is a good opportunity for a crypto currency that is tied to the us dollar or euro to free us from the power of the payment processors πŸ€”
