The UK considered Scotland as a "nuclear dustbin". Sites suggested for dumping nuclear submarines included the islands of Skye, Mull and Barra.Unbelievable this was even considered.https://theferret.scot/nuclear-submarines-dump-scotland/#politics #defence #nuclear #Scotland #submarines

@fitheachI was listening to this on the radio this morning. "Sea bed storage" was the phrase used to disguise the fact that they would be dumping iirc ๐

@RunningInCircles Storage, eh? You can try and disguise anything with words. After 60 years the submarines would be in some state and there would be radioactive contamination all along the west coast. As always what stuff don't we hear about?

@fitheach No surprise to me.Compare and contrast with a proposal to dump them at the mouth of the thames... ;-)

@gemlog Exactly! They also considered dumping the nuclear submarines in international waters until the US & others complained.

@fitheach whatseveb more worrying is this was *well* after 1986, by then the UK had already deployed AEA engineers to the Soviet Union to help advise about clear up at Chernobyl and a lot of MAFF (now Defra) resources were (and still are) put into background radiation monitoring. I can't understand how /anyone/ could even think this would be in the slightest a rational idea..

@vfrmedia Yeah, the idea the nuclear submarines could be quietly dumped and people would *forget* about them. The report authors were probably considered experts.

@Jason_Dodd You're right. The UK Ministry of Defence have a track record of dumping all over people.

@gemlog @fitheach TBH if there wasn't already a sunken USA vessel from WWII full with live explosives there *and* two active nuclear power stations close by I wouldn't have put it past MOD to have also considered the less affluent areas near the Essex coasts (where its muddy and treacherous with much less container traffic or even leisure boating)

@vfrmedia The report actually suggested the dumping site had to be visible so the Russians could be spotted trying to steal them. Give me strength! There is an on-going situation in Dalgety Bay, in Fife, where the shoreline is contaminated with radium due to the MoD dumping WWII planes off the coast. They have previous, as they used to say in all the best police dramas.@gemlog

@fitheach @vfrmedia _sub surface_ burial in mid ocean may actually be a good option. Work done in the 70s show that the heavy clays of the ocean floor stick to the heavy metal particulates and vertical migration is very low (Hollister 76). It's just socially unacceptable.Currently some of these aging subs are mothballed at Scottish harbors - complete with nuclear material. What could possibly go wrong.

@StuC As stated in the article, some of the nuclear subs are sitting, rusting away, at Rosyth dockyard, near Edinburgh. In fact, it used to be possible to see them when crossing the old Forth Road Bridge. See photo with the FRB in the background. The remaining subs are rusting in Plymouth (south of England).@vfrmedia

@sign The report only came to light recently, but was written back in the 1980s.Your sentiment does apply to the stationing of the Trident nuclear submarines at Faslane, just north of Glasgow. The UK government is desperate to hold on to that facility as there is nowhere else they can be sited.

@fitheach @vfrmedia not the point.the point was detective cop show's vocab and they always said things like "he has priors" or "does he have any priors?"

@gemlog I think that was on the point. It is not the sort of thing that can be searched for on *Tube, as no-one will have transcribed the text. However, the use of "previous", meaning a criminal record, is so common that the dictionary cites it as an example noun.@vfrmedia

@gemlog @fitheach I think it depends what part of the world you are in - if STV wasn't now registration only I'd try and find an old episode of Taggart to see what they said then ๐ In older UK cop shows they say "suspect has previous". for newer ones its often accepted detectives know this from PNC (Police National Computer) and LIO (local intelligence office). Thames Valley once thought I'd trained my *cat* to watch for their helicopter and perch on the wheeled bin when it was above ๐ธ >>
