ru paul is a garbage human being and i despise his fucking showi don't care if it's "bringing acceptance to drag queens" it's a horribly transphobic show run by a dipshit who doesn't give two fucks about the trans community and proudly throws around slurs like they're meaningless

ru paul once ran a segment on his godawful show called "female or shemale" where contestants had to determine whether an image was of a, quote, "biological female or a psychological female". this alone shows that he's an asshat, but he also constantly uses the term "tranny", and once stated that the only difference between a trans woman and a drag queen was money and surgery. he is an indefensible piece of shit who drags trans people down.

look at this exquisite piece of work. note the dash between she and male, further emphasising how trans women aren't female in ru paul's eyes. note the incredibly subtle colour choices of the blue shemale side and the pink female side. note all the contestants thinking that everything is fine because ru paul doesn't treat these slurs like the horribly offensive words they are and instead reintroduces them to the public lexicon and reminds all the trans women watching that they're considered subhuman. such fantastic queer representation.

@lynnesbian this reminds of a bad Patton Oswalt bit where he was talking about outrage culture and was appalled that queer people were mad at Ru Paul for saying “tranny”

@lynnesbian I'm not trans, so maybe my opinion doesnt mean much, but I don't know that drag people getting mainstream approval means much for trans people. It's not treated the same. when a cis queer guy is doing drag, people are like "look at her, she's having fun." but when someone wants to live a whole life as their real gender, people stammer like "uh him, her, uhhh sorry I'm still getting used to this give me tiiiiime"

@lynnesbian I had to cut off contact with someone over their obsession with that show. the more they watched the more insufferable they were becoming, speaking only in references and in-jokes and generally imitating the shitty attitudes on there.

@lynnesbianI enjoy watching some of the drag queens/contestants' solo work, but my friend showed me one episode and the whole style of the show and the hosts felt very hostile.

@lynnesbian a smoldering example of why I distance myself from drag as much as possible. Sure, it's not all like this, and much of it is great, but it's way too easy to run into horrible shit.

@lynnesbianNot only is that comment abiut the difference between trans women and drag queens hideously transmisic, it also is just so inaccurate as to what drag is. Drag isnt "men dressed as women" its "people, typically but not always men, dressed as a caricature of femininity in an artistic display"

@interneteh @lynnesbian that it took so long for them to mostly be okay with trans women and the most recent season cast their only trans contestent as an ultra villain doesn't reflect great on ru, but I'm hesitant to directly link "RuPaul" with drag as an institution given how many trans elders I've known who value drag.

@Jewbacchus @interneteh @lynnesbian i don't link rupaul with drag. i see him as his own brand, therefore free for target practice. there are too many other drag queens out there who are more deserving of even half the attention he gets. that he used a trans contestant's coming out story as the RPDR "sob story" of a season and then had the audacity to turn around and tell the world that trans women couldn't be drag queens was such a dick move i don't even know where to begin.
