Does anyone have experience they'd share in regards to setting up a fediverse server? We have been playing with Pleroma and honestly it just hasn't struck a positive chord on a number of levels (and a few negative chords). Mastodon is too heavy. I've been looking at what all is out there, and I kind of like Friendica (seems to be the "gotta catch them all" of protocol and server support...) but it's hard to say without setting one up.

Friendica Core team member here.I have set up a personal Friendica server after having set up a personal Diaspora server and it is by far the easiest to set up (simple PHP/MySQL site with cronjob). However it isn't a lightweight app, shared hosting is out of the question for reasonable response times. If you can be more explicit about the chords that you are expecting/avoiding, I can tell you if Friendica strikes them.
