@futurebird Sorry to be a bother, I wrote this a week ago, probably between two edits, and a software failure prevented the distribution of my comment until today. I can see the correct version now!

@futurebird What would they learn, broadly speaking, if they wouldn't want to get near it in the first place?

It's official now, my local grocery store doesn't sell tall kitchen trash bags that aren't scented in some way. It's terrible.

@bobjonkman Please, cable TV pioneered subscription services full of ads way before Internet. It’s the evergreen “Why not both?” of broadcast media financing.

@RYStorm I disagree, anyone can figure out the "quick and dirty" way of doing things. Best practices are acquired after a significant amount of time spent making mistakes, and so they are valuable as a time-saver when shared with people who don't want to go down the rocky road of discovery.

@RYStorm At this point i feel like it's a language issue. People are asking about best practices because they don't want the worst practices. Asking for "practices" would make little sense. Would "good practices" work better for you, and would you recognize their existence?

@futurebird Coming from France where schools don’t have a mandatory auditorium nor graduation dances, this reads like a very American cultural exception. As a result, the education argument doesn’t really stick with me.

@futurebird Very few school clubs, and not before high school. Socialization would have been either hanging informally at someone’s place or outside, or extracurricular activities, although with an 8-hour long school day, it has to be evenings or week-ends.

@clacke I agree complete human extinction is not easy, but we currently are on this path. And as we probably cull our own ranks in the future, the progress towards that dreadful end will slow down, but there are a couple considerations of scale that factor in:- Anything to do with nuclear fission may end up releasing catastrophic levels of radiations over large areas for a long time. Civil or military.- So far we've experienced a slow decline in biodiversity, one extinct species at a time, but entire ecosystems might break at once when key elements are finally removed, in a fast domino effect we may not be able to adapt to fast enough.- The entire Earth climate has stayed within a relatively narrow temperature range over the past 450 million years, and that was without human intervention. Now that we have durably altered the climate, the natural fluctuations may fall outside of that narrow range towards uncharted territory that most life on the planet was never prepared for.Said otherwise, I'm not sure there can be a cycle like you describe because we simply don't fully know what the downturn of the cycle looks like in practice. Maybe by the end of the downturn the required conditions for the initial upturn won't be there anymore.

I’m happy to report that yesterday the first informal tenant meet & greet was held in my 50-apartment Brooklyn building. Organized on Discord after an agressive recruitment campaign from the server creator including putting QR codes in the trash closets on each residential floor. It was nice, 9 people showed up, it was nice to put faces on names I’d seen on Discord or in the package closet.
