I am trying to learn some JavaScript on my holidays too. I've never been able to call myself a programmer.I spend a lot of time thinking in systems and processes because of my work, and I can usually bash things together until I figure them out. But I've never felt capable of writing a complete application.

@whtrbt JS is a lot of fun, I'd be happy to help if you think you need code review :)

@neauoire That would be great. I'm not even at that stage yet though!I really need to set myself a tiny project and work through it - that's usually the best way for me to learn.Any ideas, something small that might be useful for this community?

@jim A tiny game creation system? Learn something about machine learning and play with bird vocalisations? A fun little synthesiser? A roguelike?

@whtrbt Ambitious! I'm kind of a website junkie so I will say maybe you should get a website/webserver up like @neauoire suggested and we can help you go from there.I imagine you have some cool ideas... anyway to start:https://github.com/zeit/next.js/tree/canary/examples/with-emotionI usually throw people at this example to see some modern web development.

@jim @whtrbt Making a website in JS doesn't have to be ambitious, all this react madness is just a distraction from building simple lean static sites.

@neauoire @whtrbt I agree to an extentsometimes it can magically abstract away some learning complexity (although add some)and sometimes it can indirectly teach you something

@jim @neauoire @bee I like the idea of making a site for myself, so I will think about what that would be. That's good, it's something to work towards.@neauoire, I saw you just discovered Arne's site (androidarts)... that is an OLD WEB FASHIONED TREASURE TROVE OF GOODNESS.

@whtrbt @neauoire @bee part of learning is failing with energy.

@jim @whtrbt @bee I read that as "flailing", and I instinctively nodded.
