taking a break from this book's section on the McCarthy Era (tl;dr: it sucked) to post a 1980 CIA memo on hunting homosexuals that it reminded me of https://www.muckrock.com/news/archives/2017/mar/03/cia-homosexual/most of it's grim and dumb, but parts of it come off like an ad for gay marriage

@VyrCossont It's hard to find homosexuals because they're respectful, clean, happy, and even do things other than have sex. This menace must be stopped.

@VyrCossonthttps://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/LGBT_rights_under_communismThis toot prompted me to read this fascinating article. Apparently communist reception to homosexuality has been historically mixed, to say the least.

@lyliawisteria @OchotonidKnight unless your political system includes specific protections for the people who always get shit on to some degree under every existing political system, i want no part of it, it's a strict downgradeif this gets me cancelled by the "tankie is a slur" crowd, so be it

well, maybe everyone didn't take the butch/femme thing all _that_ seriously. this woman sounds badass.trying to do that would give me _personally_ some kind of aesthetic whiplash, because i own, like, two pairs of pants, and trying to go full classic butch would cause a raging case of dysphoria. (but i would have lasted about 45 seconds back then in general. here's hoping the time stream stays stable and i never have to go past the late 80s.)

@enginqueer not surprised.also there's the author to consider. this book contains the word "trans" zero times, "transgender" zero times, and "transsexual" like five, including this wonderful bit in the coda. Lillian Faderman doesn't give a quarter of a fuck about us. if she's not actually a TERF, she's harmfully naive about both trans people and the success of feminism in general.

@VyrCossont I mean mostly unconcerned is how most secondwavers were. dworkin had to be pressured into mentioning trans women at all and she was mostly like "yeah if they're treated like women they're oppressed the same way I guess"

@hierarchon @enginqueer> Andrea Dworkin, in her 1974 book Woman Hating, stated that "every transsexual has the right to survival on his/her own terms. That means every transsexual is entitled to a sex-change operation, and it should be provided by the community as one of its functions."i didn't expect to ever agree with Dworkin on anything, but she got this right

for those of you just tuning in, this has been Lillian Faderman's "Odd Girls and Twilight Lovers", approximately the 1940s thru 1960s sections https://a.co/aUFdaBagood read, lots of primary sources, i can't remember where i found it, so i'm curious if anyone else has read it and what the other good bits are

unfortunately this brings us to one of the stupidest fucking ideas in feminist history: political lesbianism.ignore the research suggesting that it's no more possible to choose to be gay than to choose to be straight, and make an ideology out of a sexuality. GREAT PLAN.

i'm gonna go back to finding the funny bits, if there even are any past this point. but here's one important lesson from the lesbian separatist nutjobs: marketing matters, and it's easier to sell a simplified reductive idea than a bunch of research and policy changes.of course, that can be used for good: "you can just be a girl" did more for me than decades of queer theory :trans_heart:
