       The division between academia and money is engineered. Self sorting. Keep the idealists in school insulated from impacts of their "research" and from any critique of pure rationality  for decision making. Get those willing to take money in positions in engineering - closer to the weapons technologies. Get those who are disillusioned and depressed - the drop outs, to do software start ups so they build spying systems for free to the government.
