The division between academia and money is engineered. Self sorting. Keep the idealists in school insulated from impacts of their "research" and from any critique of pure rationality for decision making. Get those willing to take money in positions in engineering - closer to the weapons technologies. Get those who are disillusioned and depressed - the drop outs, to do software start ups so they build spying systems for free to the government.

The reason we all hate work so much is not because we hate doing things productive, but because work is so disconnected from our life. None of things I dream about doing, none of my relationships with friends, none of my hobbies or special fixations come with me to work. It's not just that theres a time for work and a time for play, we all know that and can be okay with it. It's that theres a time to be who my boss wants me to be and a time to be me. And thats unacceptable.

Ethical consumption is a harm reduction technique. It's valid when put in its place there, and not used as a gold standard or to police people who don't have resources, knowledge, etc to do so, or who engage in different forms of it than you do.
