@thegibsonRemember Myspace? aol? No. They are a rotting cesspool, pile of useless garbage or a garbage fire. Facebook 's centralized nature is Zionism and collusion with spooks

@thegibson Unless the people running nodes are independently wealthy, the fediverse ultimately depends on shareholder value in one way or another. ;)

@thegibson That said, I despise Facebook and can’t help but hope they go the way of MySpace in the very near future.

@thegibson Nor is it expensive for me as it is somewhat subsidized in my particular case, but it seems like costs could scale quicker than user base once you break 500 or so users.

@jerephil Yeah, I was on Azure starting out... As a matter of Fact... the disk image I'm running on Hyper-V is still an Azure-Ubuntu image. :)it can get excessively expensive once you hit critical mass on user base.

@thegibson I’m curious how those costs could be mitigated. I happen to know that bandwidth and power are cheap now, and hardware even one generation is incredibly cheap.

@jerephil S3 storage for images, much cheaper blobs, even free in some cases...I used Azure local storage... a little pricey, no security concerns.S3 does some weird stuff with image hosting, and I was concerned User's images could easily be exposed.aaaannnd I may be a security control freak.

@jerephil @thegibson we could also go single-user instances on a Pi with pleroma or something light like that. Activity Pub is still a baby!

@thegibson Storage is cheap. Like, stupid cheap. I’m running Cloudflare in front of Cascadia, which means that I don’t even have to worry about bandwidth. :)

@ella_kane @thegibson We could but I don’t think most users would ever want to. Those of us here are a bit different. Those of us who actually run instances are masochists at heart.

@jerephil @ella_kane I do this to feel like I am helping...I want to make noise and virtually set fire to the status quo.I'm less a masochist... more of a rebel trickster spirit.wait... nope, that's still a masochist with a slight case of megalomania.
