a lot of people find web #accessibility a bit opaque and confusing, and as a result I've seen some well-meaning (but not always accurate) advice circulating. so to clear some things up (a thread)

how long a screen reader took to read different toot weirdnessesWORKED WELL:normal emojis = described ("party popper", "blowing kisses")custom emojis = their defining words are read (e.g. :mastodon: as "mastodon")"in this house" meme: ~5 seconds (all the punctuation ignored)some kaomoji e.g. (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻ was read as "table flip" (!)TOTALLY SKIPPED:some kaomojiN.B. it being skipped is not a problem as long as it's "decorative" for yr toot i.e. if you skip it, you don't lose meaning

how long a screen reader took to read different toot weirdnesses (2 of 2)DIDN'T WORK WELL:ASCII art bunny sign meme: ~8 seconds (most the punctuation ignored, some underscores read)ASCII art "per my last email" guy: 15 seconds (read some of the slashes, pipes etc.)"BUTTS ARE COOL" emoji-letter toot: 20 seconds (e.g. read as "hacker text B, hacker text U")a longer emoji-letter toot: 60 seconds(very not good)

my advice for #accessibility tooting:• always add descriptions to images, so screen-reading users know what they're about. include what the key info is (e.g. what food it is, description of yr face and mood if it's a selfie)• use normal/custom emoji if you want, but sparingly• avoid spelling whole words with the letter emojis.N.B. different screen readers act differently - this is just illustrative of how they can work. See e.g. https://www.deque.com/blog/dont-screen-readers-read-whats-screen-part-1-punctuation-typographic-symbols/ for more detail

@seta one measure of how #masto is different is how much folks talk about specific ways to improve #accessibility.
