not gonna lie when people say they just "want a linux distro as simple as OS X/Windows" then people list off ones that are simple as hell and they're like "nah this feature doesn't work like it does on windows/os x" i scream internally

@pea I suspect there's a lot of really bad things a lot of distros do that you just don't think about any more because you're used to it

@pea I want a Linux distribution that acts like Windows but the closest I've ever seen is an old version of ReactOS that bluescreened constantly.

@pea I want my windows to snap like windows 10 and multi monitor taak bars like windows 10.Other than that I don't care much as long as the buttons are on the right and the file/edit/whatever menus are in the window.

@GraspingAnts I'm not familiar with Windows 10 snapping, but assuming it's only left and right like Windows 7 was, Gnome has that

@pea @SamanthaCayne @GraspingAnts basically everything except gnome will give you at least windows 10 level of window snapping

@pea @SamanthaCayne @GraspingAnts it's possible that gnome does it too now, but I can't say for sure since it's just an unusable mess for me anyway

@pea my fav lame excuses:“it doesn't have <proprietary app with horrible UI>”“it doesn't have <proprietary app for features built in to the DE or OS>”“it doesn't have <feature windows 10 stole from compiz-circa-2007>”“it doesn't have <game that runs faster in wine than windows>”“it's only free if your time is free *proceeds to spend 6 minutes waiting for a $2000 machine to reboot because a tablet driver or something fucked up*”

@shadowsinwater @flussence the unfortunate reality of the matter is that the best way to get rid of most of them is also the most painful way.Microsoft and Apple were never a problem for me since I’ve used Linux and Android for ages, even when I did have an iPhone it was centuries old and effectively on extended life support, running an unsupported iOS versionCurrently i use SMS as my alternative to Facebook messenger for staying in contact with people, and unfortunately service providers aren’t really that much better than facebook. It’s only really possible to go so far unless you want to cut yourself off from normal humansAmazon is the hardest one this time of year for me probably, since it’s really hard to put in the effort to buy things locally now that we’re used to the convenience, or at least from not-quite-as-big-companies. I also have the issue of using Twitch a lot, which is owned by amazon, but I’ll actually get into that in the Google section. As for Google, I’ll split this into two sections: 1) If you’ve got an Android phone, your goal from a security and getting-away-from-the-big-5 perspective probably is to be running AOSP (android open source project — basically the very base OS of android itself) WITHOUT Gapps (which is the proprietary bit that google gets you with on top of the open source android OS)unfortunately, this means you miss out on the Google Play StoreA lot of apps from Google Play will actually still work, and there’s this app you can download off F-Droid called “YALP” that’ll let you download free stuff from the Play Store regardless and roll the dice, but your other option is to use MicroG which is an open source reimplementation of the Gapps APIs, it’s up to you2) Media consumption. This is where Google really kills me — with Youtube. Amazon also does the same with Twitch to a certain extent since I’m into that type of content. The biggest advice I can give, bar none, is on your phone, an android app called “NewPipe” that you can install from FDroid — this app will let you watch youtube without being pulled into all of google’s monitoring really, you can’t log in with it since that would be missing the point really, but you can go in and subscribe to people and have your subscriptions saved locally in the app, etc, it’s an incredible app.For desktop, there’s not a similarly clear cut option. If you’re comfortable with the command line, there’s mps-youtube, youtube-dl, streamlink — and people have various GUIs of these here and there, but they’re rarely going to be packaged in a distroMy biggest advice with desktop is probably starting to use an RSS feed reader for following youtubers you really care about keeping up with, then using something like mpv with youtube-dl to open the links somehow, I can’t give you the specifics setting this up on your system, but I can maybe help if you need it. The way to convert a youtube channel name/url/etc to an RSS feed can be seen here (sorry for literally sending you a chunk of code, I wasn’t sure how to explain this exactly and the post is already getting really long)
