i wish i was hot enough to know how to install a microphone hardware kill switch in a phonei'm sure i could figure it out but i really wouldn't like cutting into the case to make a spot for the switch so i probably wouldn't

@demasiadocool i am a hugely paranoid person that doesn't act like a paranoid person at all, it always surprises people when i see their google home or alexa or whatever and i'm like "hey unplug that if you're having me over please, sorry for the trouble" or have tape over my webcams and shit

@pea"They" can always listen you using the phones of the people surrounding you.

@demasiadocool oh yeah, absolutely, but that's a stretchfirst they would have to identify your geolocation which, if i've tossed my phone in a faraday pouch they're gonna have a little trouble withthen they would have to compromise all of the phones around you, and automate it somehow since that's an unreasonable task to do manually when people mill about like they do*then* they would have to separate your voice out from that of everyone else, also tricky, given that microphones on phones are fairly shitthat said, you're a mean fuck for saying that and sending a shiver down my neck :p

@demasiadocool if anything, spying on you based on your *digital* acquaintances with worse security practices is much easiereven if I force my friends onto secure messaging of some sort or another they're not going to be more secure with their devices, a compromised device means that the messages are compromised regardless, etc

@demasiadocool as soon as you bring the real, physical world into the equation things get all tricky and fuzzy and it's hard to get computers to handle that

@peaJajaja First of all, "they" have to chose you as a target: have you done something to attract their attention?😝

@demasiadocool i have observably strange privacy and browsing habits from a web tracker/isp/whoever perspective, but other than that, not reallydoesn't mean i shouldn't guard against itif i do draw any nasty attention in the future, these days a lot of information sticks around for a long time if you're not careful

@demasiadocool @pea wonder if there's a market for small smartphone bags / cases that block both radio & sound so you can just slip it in there when you're not using it and it'll be completely offline with no eavesdropping capabilities.Downside: no incoming calls. Also might waste away the battery as it futily cranks up the transciever power to reach a tower.

@polychrome @demasiadocool i'm definitely imagining like, a phone holster that's like that, it's got a clasp on it that magnetizes down or something, etc,,, could you actually have a magnetized clasp on something you were going to put a smartphone into? I've no clue honestly

@pea @demasiadocool it is a hard drive thing but I imagine a strong enough magnet might also interfere with flash memory - I never checked! Should look into it.I do know Apple used magnets to stick their phone covers to the iPad and iPhone but those were designed for that.In the meantime you should look for Faraday bags - not as comfy as a cover and won't block audio but it will nullify radio transmissions.
