@sungo It's way too common now...sounds like the wider disaster was avoided at least.

So, the cops got a tip. They showed up at the school, expecting a fight, by their own admission. They were able to put the school on lockdown before they opened fire in a public street in front of a school. They then chased the kid into the school, found him in a stairwell, exchanged more gun fire. The kid then killed himself. The lockdown means the kid couldn't get into a classroom. But it does not magically turn the walls bulletproof. That police department has an immense amount of less-lethal weaponry at their disposal but seems to have chosen not to use it.There's a lot of this story that both doesn't make sense but makes a shit load of sense if you know that police department.

@sungo Holy hell. I wish I was surprised. I love Richmond, but the police there always looked ready to fight.

@Cyborgneticz Particularly if you're not white or straight-passing. And god help you if you're hispanic or homeless.

@sungo I had a friend, white, visibly queer, who was living in a storage unit, and the police threatened to kick them out. The first time I visited was 1st Friday and the cops were blocking streets brought out horses. It was scary.

These, incidentally, are the cops that requisitioned a fucking tank and, iirc, grenade launchers from the military surplus program. Because Richmond fucking Indiana is going to get hit by a TERRIST insurgency or something. I don't know.

@ky0ko Gary and Evansville are only barely part of Indiana :) Not even in the right time zone :)Thing is about Richmond, its citizens kinda fought for the south in the civil war. The grand dragon of the KKK lived just south in the 80s and they used First Presbyterian Church in Richmond as a recruiting zone. It's about 18 flavors of racist and bigoted.I love my home town and I've spent a large portion of my adult life there. But goddamn it has some serious problems.

-- "We train for active shooters, and we say we're not waiting for SWAT, we have to handle it," [the police chief] said. "And that's exactly what happened." --He's so close to that backwoods sheriff mumbling about taking care of things the old fashioned way. Why wait for SWAT? Why not round up any ol' gun hand and storm in?https://www.pal-item.com/story/news/crime/2018/12/13/dispatch-death-3-minutes-inside-dennis-active-shooter-response/2305294002/
