Maybe a writer who named her only WOC character "Cho Chang" is not entirely woke, everyone

Lmao her name is so not an Asian name that the Japanese and Chinese translations of the book change her name to an actual Asian name

@gayhobbes I don't think I ever knew her last name was Chang. Christ that's just an unbelievable unoriginal combination of names.

@elchapo @radicalrobit it's also definitely not Korean or Japanese so I have to think that JK Rowling MAY NOT have done much research when pulling this from her ass

@gayhobbes @radicalrobit yeah it’s 100% not Japanese. Cho is a Korean family name. Chang is an extremely common Chinese family name. So she just kind of...smashed to Asian surnames together. The character might as well be named Honda Samsung for all the sense it makes.

@gayhobbes @radicalrobit yeah that’s not great, although Hikaru is at least a valid and not uncommon given name

@gayhobbes @elchapo @radicalrobit According to George Takei it's from the Sulu Sea in the Philippines, apparently because Roddenberry wanted the character to be pan-Asian rather than any specific ethnicity. Giving him a Japanese first name didn't even happen until after TOS ended, and was first done by an extended universe author.

@CJBurger @elchapo @radicalrobit does Gene Roddenberry know that the name still comes from like, a culture so it can't be pan-Asian

@NiemandMarkus lmao even if she had one don't you think she'd be like, so self-assured that she knew it was an actual name that she wouldn't even double check? What I really wonder is why a fucking EDITOR didn't stop this
