Australia passes a new law that requires companies to provide a way to get encrypted communications and data via a warrant process.https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2018/12/australia-passes-new-law-to-thwart-strong-encryption/#Privacy

@hund This should surprise no one. Most of the nations that belong to the British Empire (where the Crown is head of state) have a reputation for trampling on the rights of its subjects.Canada seems to be the only one that doesn't do that...yet.

@mattI just got back from visiting my family in Australia and to be honest I would say 90 percent of people didnt know about this law. I was worried going through the airport that I was going to be arrested and searched because I have a phone with apps like protonmail, signal etc. And my computers hard drive is encrypted.I have nothing to hide and would have granted access if asked but just having encryption on my phone and computer gives them probable cause to detain and interrogate@hund

@matt @hundAnd this was before the law passed. Also, Im just going to say it. Canada isnt that great either and this will eventually happen here too. I find a lot of Americans glamorize Canada because of their dislike of Trump. But the grass is definately not greener on the other side of the boarder.

@matt @hundAnd as much as I love the US, I think its government has done a pretty sufficient job in trampling the rights of its people.Unfortunately there is no such thing as true freedom in this world

@canuckifiedoz @matt @hund I don't allow anyone to access my personal effects without a warrant. That is my right in the US.Handing over an encryption password is also a no-no. I *might* hand over unencrypted items after consulting my lawyer though, depending on the verbage of the warrant.

@canuckifiedoz @matt @hund "I have nothing to hide" is a dangerous mindset. Never let yourself take that position.

@mattI hear you about the mindset. However I chose to weigh whether my personal privacy trumps being detained for a period of time especially when I have a wife and 3 kids that rely on me.And as an australian citizen they can still detain you without a warrant@hund
