So I joined mastodon after the whole bofa.lol thing. What was it, why did it go down and why do I keep seeing reference to it?

@lucy every so often I see some mention of it. Just wondered what it was - I have no idea.

@carbontwelve They and their admin harassed multiple women including myself, created entire webpages to direct abuse at us, members sent death threats, etc.and most people here were fine with it

@carbontwelve There was a user on that instance that apparently made some comments indicating he might have committed or encourages sexual assault (I never saw this; don't know for sure). The bofa admin knew the user personally and thought it might have been a misunderstood message due to a language barrier. Turns out it wasn't and the admin apologized and banned his friend, but by then the damage was done and people were moving off. That's the stuff I've gleamed, but I'm sure it's more complex.

@carbontwelve basically- it was another mastodon instance- apparently the admin was an asshole??- it was renowned for its shitposting and infamous for whatever the hell happened to the admin(disclaimer: I also joined shortly after the bofa.lol incident so this is all second-hand knowledge)

@carbontwelve bofa.lol was (as far as I can see) an instance that housed people who wanted stuff exactly like Twitter and brought a lot of it's culture with them.Needless to say, it became very toxic, people started blocking and eventually the admin had enough and removed the instance.I don't have any more details though, as I wasn't involved with them at all and it crashed shortly after I joined.

@GinnyMcQueen ah, a toxic instance. Good riddance in that case then.
