A few weeks ago I finally hit burn out with my job and took a couple of weeks off to recover. During that time I thought a nice way to relax would be to put the electronic devices down and build a garden office; note I have never built anything like this before.

Having finally realised my job was what was burning me out constantly I also resigned, but that’s a story for another thread…

It took another day to cut the wood for the frames. I managed to screw up the mitre cuts by cutting the short side and not the long side (or the other way round I don’t remember) but it meant I had to recut all the angled pieces, I didn’t know it at the time but this caused issues later on.

Before I continue I’ll explain the mistake that’s not quite obvious here. I was following rough guides from a book. It’s diagrams showed the wood as being square even though it’s rectangular. I therefore cut the angle as the picture showed, with the short side facing up, this meant all my wood was cut 90 degrees from where it should have been. I had to turn it once and then recut. This resulted in slightly shorter studs, something I didn’t think much of until later when I realised my front wall was out of plumb by exactly the amount of wood I chopped off, because half a cm multiplied by four lengths adds up… oops!

By the weekend I had everything ready to get the roof in place. The roof frame is ridiculously heavy, fortunately my dad was able to come over and help lift it into place and by help I mean he lifted into place while I did little more than touch the wood…

A few days later I was surprised by a delivery of OSB for sheathing. I wasn’t expecting it to turn up for weeks as everywhere was out of stock. I quickly found out I had no way of cutting it to size and so had to buy the cheapest jigsaw I could find, which turned out to be amazing value! The next day I wrapped it all like a present in something called house wrap to make the walls waterproof.

@meena this was over ten years ago now and thanks to the governments decision in the 80s that wasn’t repealed until after I left school I didn’t know much about such things 😔 I frequented various tech channels plus cd and eventually trans related channels as the nick lelu, mostly on freenode.

Anyway I guess my point with this thread is that I never thought I would be able to do this and in finally giving it a go I had the most fun I have had in a very long time. I may update this in the near future once it’s actually completed.

@meena absolutely, it’s actually the drama around freenode and the emergence of libera that peaked my interest in IRC again.

Am I going to have to learn how to sew in order to get a smocked and hooded jersey dress? Does such a thing exist?

@w84death I used to use that browser when developing websites on my old 386 luggable, way back in the early days. Good memories 😊

Who spends $100 on leggings 😮 it feels like an obscene amount of money on one item of clothing.

Is it just my instance or has the fediverse slowed down for anyone else? Like my federated timeline used to be buzzing all the time...

Got to migrate this instance from one server to another... it might disappear. See you on the other side.
