I am having trouble deciding if Annihilation is a good movie or not.

@orb I decided it wasn’t. It’s a spooky movie. It’s got an interesting premise. But ultimately the delivery and pacing is really underwhelming to me.

@SquidPresident @orb I feel like it was a potentially smart film that sadly trested the audience like idiots. It was best when mysterious, and there was definitely that sense of "let's not spoonfeed the audience", except the film reverses on that HARD, like they were petrified we might get confused or bored. Also, I strongly feel the film should have started when they wake up in the tent, right after passing through the shimmer.

@zoey @SquidPresident Right. The movie is really compelling and mysterious, until it’s not...And yes all the stuff before they wake up in the shimmer I didn’t need to know. Woulda been a much better movie to start there and really fill out the exploration of the strange place...

@SquidPresident @orb I defy you to give me any justification for the scene where it's explained that each character is "damaged goods." Like we were watching predator or something. There was no reason to follow the main character down the hole. Why did we need that wrapped up? Were we supposed to care about the character? Cause it seemed to be about setpieces.

@zoey @SquidPresident And really the choice of electronic dance music is maybe really what set me off. That kind of music is such a cultural thing for me. The director thought he needed something that sounds strange and alien so he picked electronic dance music. But to me that is the music that makes me feel like I am home. So in that moment of the film I wasn’t alienated from the alien, I felt alienated from the movie itself.

@zoey @SquidPresident Again I compare it to 2001. Kubrick chooses music that absolutely no one feels comfortable listening to when he scores the monolith. So it’s supposed to make you feel uncomfortable. And it works for basically everyone.Annihilation was good until it yelled at me: EBM fans are weirdos.

@SquidPresident @orb Those dumb choices were really confounding. I thought the film was a huge disappointment. Not due to hype - I never heard of it before watching - but because it really seemed capable of being a fantastic film. It was a really jarring flip-flop between "popcorn thriller" and "quiet existential horror," which is just weird.I don't want to say it's horrible, though, because it wouldn't have been jarring if there weren't great highs to contrast the lows.

@zoey @SquidPresident The damaged good dialogue made sense to me, it explained why they were all there in the first place because they had to know they wouldn’t make it back out right? So what kind of person takes on a mission like that? Character development through dialogue imo.And yes, just cut everything in the hole. She crawls down the hole and then we see her and her mirror being in the lighthouse again and suddenly its a much better movie...

@zoey @SquidPresident and existential horror and popcorn thriller can be the same movie! This one just has bad aesthetics at the worst possible moment...

@orb @SquidPresident I guess! I see what you mean. It just seemed not worthwhile, probably because it was sloppy.I'll admit it lost major points for me when they brought up the character who cut herself. You immediately know we're going to see her scars later. First, that's super ham-handed, and second, it's yet another example of being shown too much - if we saw the scars, we would have figured it out.

@zoey @SquidPresident The Girl Who Cuts Herself (With Explanations) was a bit of a push yes. Just show the scars and no explanation please. We all know how this works...

@zoey @SquidPresident but yes, again, good idea poor execution, there needs to be a reason why these five characters would choose a doomed mission, we just didn’t need to be told it in quite such a trite way...

@zoey @SquidPresident woulda been much more effective to just learn that yes there was no reasonable hope of coming out alive (or at least the same) and then you see some scars and you learn her husband came back weird and then you learn she has inoperable cancer and then you’re like AH THEY CHOOSE THE DOOM AND THE ADVENTURE I GET IT

@orb @SquidPresident Oh man, that's so dramatically better! I would have loved to have met these people, then learned they're doomed, then learn why. They should just let us in the editing room. The film would probably be like 45 minutes but i bet it'd be incredible
