the N64 and gamecube generations of consoles were the best era for low quality 3D. super mario 64 has some really basic 3D going on (SM64DS looked way better, even though the DS is weaker than the N64) but it still has an aesthetic charm to it. meanwhile, skyrim and other "photorealistic" games on the 360/PS3 look awful. older games that attempted photorealism or similar (midtown madness 3, ridge racer R4) completely fail at achieving realism but instead create an unintentional aesthetic of approximated real life that looks wonderful. the same can't be said about photorealistic 360 games

this is far from a universal truth of course, there were some games that attempted photorealism on early 3D consoles and looked horrendous. DS shovelware is a great example of this

@lynnesbian idk, I kinda partially agree but honestly I think skyrim/a lot of games from that era just look bad in general due to deliberate creative decisions

@lynnesbian (like, not really because of failing at realism or whatever, just design elements that were the style at the time but never really looked 'good', too me)

@lynnesbian It's the whole thing of anything stylised with good art direction will always look good, but bland attempts at realism will age horrendously. Skyrim is frustrating because it has moments where it's stunning, but everything looks terrible up close. Can't agree about SM64 though. Everything on the N64 looked like arse.

@lynnesbian Nothing I dislike more then the shader effect mods for Skyrim that turn the bloom up to 50x and so much fxaa. Bloom, blurs, and bad AA make games look awful.

@lynnesbian Skyrim with the mesh improvement mod and a high-res texture pack looks a lot better imo. Oh, and you'll want Vivid Weather, and Realistic Water 2, and Flora Overhaul, and a face texture mod, and DYNDOLOD, and some NPC face textures, and. . . Skyrim modding is exhausting.

@lynnesbian Skyrim can look good, the problem is that making it look good takes about as much time as finishing the main questline
