Man, Shift Jelly really screwed the pooch with the latest Pocket Casts update. They've killed several features that were very important to power users (and, considering it's a paid app, I imagine most users are power users) and are suggesting bringing them back will be difficult or impossible with their new backend. So...dang. I listen to a lot of podcasts and interacted with the app dozens of times a day. And now I'm leaving for a different app simply to retain those features that were so key.

@Shadejackrabbit Well, for Android you might not experience the changes yet since it's still in beta (though they pushed it as the final build to iOS, so I'm not expecting major changes when the Android version is final). The biggest issue, for my use case, is that they completely changed the way auto-cleanup is done. No longer can I say "keep only the latest episode" of a podcast. Instead, it's time-based (e.g., keep only episodes from the past 5 days).

@Shadejackrabbit For hourly news podcasts, as an example, this means my feed is now flooded with dozens of podcasts that I must now manually purge. It's a major chore. They've also changed it so this is a global setting rather than something that you can set individually for each podcast.I've switched to Podcast Addict now, which isn't as good as Pocket Casts, but at least has this feature that is vital to the way I managed my subscriptions.

@ink_slinger word! I'm now on Podcast Republic, though, which frankly meets my needs better than Pocket Casts ever did. It's a bummer that they went from independent devs building a product for their users, to being part of a "digital strategy"

@rafial It really is too bad. I was loyal and recommended the app for years then, overnight without warning, a bunch of key features are gone.

@Shadejackrabbit Exactly! Some pods I listen to publish hourly (news). Others might go months without publishing. Time-based auto-cleanup completely fucks this up.

@mpjgregoire Lots, and quite a few are Canadian, though most are American, I think. Remind me tomorrow and I can send you a list or even export my OMPL file for you.

@Canageek @ink_slinger I listen to "In Our Time" from the BBC, and to a few CBC ones. But largely my list has US podcasts; it would be healthy to have some other sources.

@mpjgregoire @Canageek I listen to a variety of the Canadaland family of shows, for Cancon, plus a few more leftist oriented ones. That's in addition to a pretty large number of American shows.

@mpjgregoire Here you go. I've put an asterisk beside all of the Canadian ones. A number of those are specifically about Alberta or Edmonton, which may not be of interest to you, but I've included them anyway for the sake of completeness. https://mensuel.framapad.org/p/SfXck0lyUw

@mpjgregoire I don't, entirely. I have auto cleanup settings that keep only the last 3-5 episodes of most of my subscriptions. If I don't get to it before it's purged, I don't listen to it.I make exceptions for a few of my favourites, plus the ones that tell serialized stories (whether fiction or not). I probably should keep better track of which ones I don't listen to regularly and just unsubscribe.
