       love it when linguistic prescriptivists tell you to "check the dictionary," so I can point out that all major dictionaries are purely descriptivist, and frequently update their definitions to fit modern usage.  for example, "literally" as an intensifier had been in the dictionary for several years.If the word or usage you're complaining about isn't in the dictionary but is common enough to complain about, it probably should be, and they just haven't gotten to it yet.

       @jacethechicken it's worth noting that some are only very begrudgingly descriptivist because there's no other way to approach a dictionary. the Real Academia EspaƱola would have  everyone talking in the spanish of cervantes if they could

       @vulcao I'm only really talking about English here.  French, for example, has The French Academy -- whose members are unironically called 'immortals' -- which is a prescriptivist body with a lot of sway.
