One of the biggest philosophical tragedies was the development of the so-called Protestant work ethic. Not only did it aid the rise of capitalism, I would argue it's a big part of why "productivity" has become our new religion in the anglosphere (and probably elsewhere in the so-called West). We may have dropped many of the Christian trappings, but we sure kept the notion that your worth as a human is measured by your work output and your productivity.

@ink_slinger and the "productivity" ethos creeps into our lives outside of work as well.

@testingwithfire Yep. That's why I feel like it's become our new religion. Gotta be productive even when I'm not being paid. Hell, if I believed half of the "self-help" think pieces I read, I'm supposed to devote my downtime to learning how to be more productive at work.
