Wife says our next big intercontinental trip (in 2-3 years time, so we can save up) should be to South America, so the time difference won't be so extreme. She's probably partly kidding but, globetrotters of the fediverse, where should a family with a young child (or possibly two...who knows what the future holds) travel to in South America? I know so little about that entire continent that I don't even know where to begin planning such a trip.

Now following a bunch of "travel South America" type hashtags on Instagram, to get ideas for future travel and to feel bad about not having the money or freedom to just get on a plane and go right now.

@ink_slinger Cuba is the safest place to travel and people are really nice, and it's the biggest wow-affect, I think. But also less people speak English than in other places so if you speak no Spanish at all it's maybe not the first place to go to.

@__h2__ I've been to Cuba, but my wife and kid haven't. I really enjoyed it and, like you say, the people are super friendly. Only once did I feel slightly unsafe. I wandered down a dark alley in Havana by mistake. This kid came over and I was sure he was going to mug me. Instead, he personally walked me to my destination and, unlike so many others, didn't seem to expect a peso for his troubles. We talked about baseball and then he said goodbye.

@__h2__ When I went, it was one of the all-inclusive resort deals, with some day trips to other parts of the country. If I go back, I think I'd like to stay in Havana or do a house stay with a Cuban family, if possible. I think that would be more interesting (though, the all-inclusive resort package would probably be real nice with a young kid in tow).

@__h2__ My Spanish is extremely limited, but I've taken classes in the past so I think Duolingo might actually be enough to bring back the skills I used to have...enough to order food and ask for directions, at least. Since I did the resort thing the last time, everyone I interacted with spoke English.

@ink_slinger I met a family with two small kids (both toddlers if my age guesses were right) in Nepal who had done several months trekking in Peru and loved it. I think they'd had porters wear the kids in those baby backpack things; they definitely did it with at least one kid in Nepal. They all seemed delighted with it, especially the porters. I think about them a lot, actually, for people I met 7 years ago

@UberTumbleweed Yes, it's probably much more enjoyable when someone else is carrying your kids. I feel like there's something a little weird about that, but I can't quite place my finger on it.

@ink_slinger You could try Argentina?

@deathmlem I've been searching "travel to X with kids," where X = every South American country I can think of. I haven't looked at all of the countries yet but, of the ones I have, Argentina is the only one that didn't include some caveat. They all say, "Family-friendly culture, but..." except Argentina. It just basically says, yeah, take your kids and it'll be awesome. So...we may look into this more.

@ink_slinger I know my friend took his son out into the plains in Patagonia and survived? (In the sense that traveling with the kid wasn’t a disaster.) Argentina is relatively stable these days.

@deathmlem Going to Patagonia with my child would be cool. She loves nature and is pretty good about walking. I think it would probably go OK. The big potential challenge would be if we decide to have another kid between now and then. I suppose the younger would be in a carrier, though, so hiking around wouldn't be too much of an issue.
