Tacoma breaks ground for the new terminus of our light #rail system today, which will extend the current mile of track through the downtown area up the hill another mile and a half to the new end a few blocks from our house, in a neighborhood whose residents will benefit greatly from the increased transit options. This pleases me far more than the continuous work on our highways.

If you have been looking to relocate to the pacific northwest, take a look at Tacoma rather than Seattle or Portland. You may be pleasantly surprised by the differences.

Tacoma's got municipal internet to push commercial providers to compete, a fantastic metro parks system independent from the political machinery, a mind to improve rail transit, increasing renter protections, and more. This is no longer your parents' Tacoma.

@djsundog Municipal internet, you say? :blobhyperthink: I lived in San Bruno, CA for a few years and the municipal internet was the best internet I've had. I miss not having to deal with fucking Comcast.

@fobo yeah, city owns its own cable TV infrastructure and leases its network to two local ISPs to manage the broadband offerings, so Comcast and CenturyLink are both on their top game to try to keep customers. The muni network is adequate for most folks (not gigabit yet tho) and gigabit fiber can be had from the telco for a hundred a month pretty much citywide. (it's why we chose Tacoma honestly)

@fobo (I say city-owned, but it's actually owned by Tacoma Power and Utilities which is an independent NGO that provides electric, water, and cable - past Tacoma wanted to keep future Tacoma's hands off of the budgets of quality-of-life critical departments like utilities and public spaces)

@djsundog But DC! And north GA! I already have two homes! I don't need a third one.

@ajroach42 then the trick is to start bending DC and/or north GA into more Tacomaesque structures ;)
