Your daily reminder that while some corporations are better than others, they are all driven by profit and thus have zero impetus to make sure their products are accessible, no matter how much they exude a "family friendly" or "inclusive" image.https://medium.com/s/thenewnew/nintendos-new-games-are-hell-for-people-with-disabilities-8e9d6b2182e9

@sandrockcstm I worked with a guy who could only type with one hand and barely use the other one (recovering from a brain tumour/surgery). He showed me this company that made accessible controllers for xbox/ps but they were stupid expensive. Looks like Microsoft put out their own though: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pLlxALBSr4w

@djsumdog Yeah, this is the problem with accommodations in a capitalist society. Accommodations exist, but they're hella expensive because their customer-base is small and they have to recoup development costs directly from the people the tech is supposed to support. As a group, disabled people make less money than non-disabled people for fairly obvious reasons, so accommodation expenses are a double disenfranchisement for them.

@sandrockcstm Yea it get's a little funky when you think about it. Disabled people don't spent money on things like cars, so it's easier for them to buy sex workers (see documentary: The Scarlet Road) and in this case, some company was making $300 controllers for people with disabilities and here MS comes alone and kills all that work by releasing theirs for $100. That company needs that money, but MS did it at/below cost to market their system/games.

@sandrockcstm and alternatively, there are people in the makerspace that release plans and tools and firmware to build these types of controllers for multiple systems at cost too.

@djsumdog I think blaming Microsoft for releasing a more affordable accessibility device misses the point of who is actually harmed when a product is made inaccessible: the disabled. It's hard for me to feel a lot of sympathy for a company that built its business model the way it did, as much as I hate M$.Also important to point out that if you need a accessible controller building your own is likely physically impossible.

@sandrockcstm Depends on the extent of your disability. The friend I knew could still solder. Some people have setups/tools that help them still build things. Others may find friends to help, and others may pay the group who put the open source stuff together to support them. But yea, I get what you're saying. Companies wouldn't do anywhere near as much if it wasn't for things like The Americans with Disabilities Act and the EU/International equivalents.

@sandrockcstm While it doesn't undermine the article, the mention of Twilight Princess does make me wanna shout "JUST PLAY THE GAMECUBE VERSION! OR THE WII U VERSION!"

@keiyakins The problem with this is that it requires the disabled person to pay for a new console they may not own, so it's still a disenfranchisement. It would be far more accessible to have a motion-control toggle in the options menu to switch between the "Wii" version and "Gamecube" version.

@sandrockcstm The Wii can run Gamecube games just fine. Though admittedly the Gamecube version is way more expensive used (because most people bought the shiny new wii version but later realized that the game was obviously designed for the gamecube first.)
