Thinking of starting an AA style group for white people where we replace alcohol with being racist."Hi, I'm Sandrockcstm, and I'm a racist."Maybe if we can get comfortable naming what we've all been conditioned to be, we can start focusing on ourselves and doing the goddamn work of decolonizing, instead of continuing to be blissfully racist towards the people we claim to be allies to.

If you are white, you are a racist by cultural indoctrination. You didn't ask for it, it's not your fault you were brought up this way, but you bear responsibility for changing your ingrained racism. It is your job to do the work.If you feel anger having read that, then it's time to look up the term "white fragility."Inoculate yourself from the anger and the outrage by admitting what you know. "I am racist." This admission will set you emotionally free to begin the real work ahead.

You will never be done decolonizing your mind. You will never be done learning to not be racist. You will do well for days, weeks, months, or even years, and then you will say or do something racist.Accept that reality now. Set your mind on accepting that reality and apologizing for it now. Because if you don't, we'll see what's happened on the fediverse this past week play out again. White people being fragile and guarding their egos under a guise of "hurt feelings."

@dankwraith We should really lean into the fact that, historically, wars almost always bankrupt the participants, and modern economies are really just huge shell games where money is moved around to avoid this bankruptcy for as long as possible.State and local warmongers don't have the financial instruments to pull this off for long, so their wars burn brighter and flame out faster.

Game journalists are already defending the $70 price tag and citing inflation as the justification, but so far I've only seen one mention the fact that buying power hasn't risen in almost 40 years, and none of them are making the logical conclusion that, hey, maybe the AAA model is untenable in a world where income disparity is so severe. You could also look into getting rid of Bobby Kotick and his 9-figure salary. But I'm not holding my breath on anyone pushing for that at this point.

The current state of open source is that people create open source projects as unpaid, self-driven internships, and then either sell or abandon the projects once they get offered real money. It's a completely unsustainable model, and explains why a lot of them end up less user friendly (can't afford a UX designer) and tend to have bugs and odd behaviors that stick around for years (or forever).Worse, these projects end up becoming toxic workplaces if they ever come into money and decide to hire people. Because resources are so constricted, contractors often find themselves being asked to work more for less money, or fighting with their boss on what is billable when it comes time for pay day. Open source contractors learn quickly to underbill for everything, or have a massive fight on their hands come payday. If you search this problem online, the advice is literally "that's just how contracting is. You gotta put in the extra unpaid work sometimes." If a project lead pushes too hard though, then contractors quit, taking their unsyced work and their institutional knowledge with them. If you've ever seen an open source project suddenly go from 12 names to 2 in between releases, and there's a massive gap from version 1.5 to 1.6, this is probably why. The projects that are useful and become long term are either the passion projects of one person, or have communities willing to donate time and code to keep them going. But they never become sustainable in the sense that people can make a living off of them. There is no job market for Open Source, when you get down to it. There's only worker exploitation, and corporate vultures picking the bones after the killing is done.

PSA: If you own a PSP, check it immediately. A lot of owners are reporting swelling/exploding batteries, particularly in the 1000 models! https://kotaku.com/psp-owners-check-your-batteries-1844527676:boost_ok:

Listen, web development is hard and I'm not looking to cancel Eugen over this, but this bug is a huge breach in federation security that undermines people's ability to trust the platform. Being told someone doesn't follow you when they actually still do is dangerous because of the follower-only post feature. People need to have confidence that these posts are only going to the accounts on their follower list, for what I think are pretty obvious reasons. The fact that this can only be fixed by a patch to the software is really bad, as any instance that refuses to update will still have the ability to stealth follow people with no recourse except to defederate from the instance entirely. The Mastodon project gets paid $150k a year through grants and monthly patron subscriptions. $60k of that is supposed to cover Eugene's salary, and the rest is supposed to go into development of the software. My question is: how did this go undetected for a year, and how did it pass QA in the first place? Again, software dev is not as simple as laypeople think it is, so I'm not claiming incompetence here, but Mastodon is a well funded project, especially in the FOSS space where most projects make less than $50 a year. I think it's reasonable to expect answers. Are there devs being paid to do QA sweeps for each release, particularly with security issues like this? Was this bug introduced through a different feature being added, or was the user feature in the settings panel not implemented correctly and shipped without thorough testinf? What steps will be taken to change the QA process so that bugs like this don't slip through again? How many people are being paid to work on Mastodon, and how many hours a month do they contribute?

@wxcafe Holy crap, this is a huge deal. What amazes me is that this has been going on for a year and nobody caught it.Has there been any discussion about how this happened and what changes need to be made to QA to avoid this kind of thing from happening again?

@RobinHood Also, as the midwest just found out, severe weather is on the rise, and we'll probably see an increased risk of Derechos, Tornadoes, and other windstorms inland. Probably best to have a disaster kit ready no matter where you live, especially as climate temperatures continue to rise.

@dankwraith Fun fact: they've done studies on this and, as it turns out: Evangelicals think a lot more about sex than non-religious folks because they're psychologically primed to do so.

@LunaDragofelis @bort @dankwraith My mother is never going to use an issue tracker. Issue trackers are for developers to speak to other developers. This is once again conflating the needs of developers with end users.

@Demosthenes @magicalmilly I'm sure you go up to people in restaurants and voice your opinion on their conversations, since they're "in public.". As we all know, this is perfectly normal and doesn't upset people at all.Learn to be less entitled and self-centered. You're embarrassing yourself.
