Posting other people's art without credit is art theft. This includes photography, though it seems a lot of you don't think it does. Photographers have bought the equipment they're using to take the photo. They've spent time learning the skills necessary to use their equipment and to compose a good photograph. They've spent time processing that photograph. They quite possibly have it for sale somewhere, and quite possibly rely on income from their photography to live.⤵️

Posting a nice photo you randomly found on the internet without taking time to find out who the original creator is and crediting them *properly*, which includes their name and a link back to their site/gallery/social media, is robbing that creator of the audience they rely on.Posting these things without credit gets YOU attention; likes and boosts and follows; while the person who put all the work into making that image gets nothing. It's shitty behaviour, especially considering it only -⤵️

       - takes a few minutes to run an image search on a photo to see if you can find the original artist. If you can't, don't post it, or (less ideal but whatever) post it with a note that says 'I tried but couldn't find the original artist, maybe someone else can find where this came from' and then if someone leaves a comment with the artist's info, you can edit your post to include it.We struggle enough to earn a living from our crafts without shameless people making it more difficult.

Also - for the viewers - if you see someone posting a photo with no credit at all and there's no indication that they took it themselves;* Don't boost/like it; don't be complicit* If you have the time and energy, run an image search on it yourself to see if you can find the original creator, and leave a comment with that information* Explain to the person that what they're doing is art theft:bob_ross: :otterheart:

@Curator Thank you for this - it is important awareness, but also just helped me consolidate in my mind what I had long been thinking but was never sure if I was just being too picky - that just posting a name alone is not enough. It's a start, but it's not enough. Go that extra bit and get a link, or ask for help getting a link.

Also also, there are *loads* of photographers on fedi posting some gorgeous stuff. Help them grow their own audiences and boost their photos instead of nicking stuff you can't credit.

@Curator I would add to this that a good sign of an image not belonging to the poster (if they haven't otherwise given any indication of ownership) is if, when you click on it, it's much smaller than expected, or has a whole bunch of jpeg artifacts, is pixelated, overly sharpened or all of the above.Poor image quality is *not* something a photographer or other visual artist would stand for when posting their own work!

@Curator feels like a stupid question, but if I don't know maybe others don't either: how do you run a reverse image search?

@helenmclaughlinart Yep. Also if the poster makes no mention of going out photographing, if they don't mention being a photographer, if the images they post are very varied (and thus might be taken by different photographers), if the rest of their account is unrelated to photography.Obviously this doesn't always apply - my photgraphy ranges from bird spotting to macros to landscapes to abstract, and I post a lot of non-photography on my account, but I also talk about *being* a photographer.

@econads Use https://tineye.com/, kagi supports it out of the box or if you still use google, that also supports it out of the box. Just upload the image or post the image url in the search bar.@Curator

@rlcw @econads depending on your browser you can also just right-click an image and choose 'aearch for image', and you'll see results of where else that image has been posted online and when.

@helenmclaughlinart @Curator Posting poor quality pictures (reduced size, strange cropping etc.) can also be an amateur's attempt to discourage art theft :BlobCat_PeekBlush:

@waterfeature @helenmclaughlinart as a photographer and other-artist, I don't know why I would go to the trouble of taking a really nice photo and then just not show it properly to people. When you make art you want people to see it as you made it, a complete creation. Otherwise I may as well just not post it at all. I'd rather just ask (and expect) people not to be dicks.

@Curator Such as https://tech.lgbt/@Natasha_Jay/115541331163037482 today. An account that so often scrapes pictures from Reddit or Facebook, and who has never, that I've seen, credited the source. Sadly she gets boosted into my TL all the time
