Very thankful for the handful of people we have in this community who report not just the spammers, but the trolls, the sealion-ers, the harassers, the bullies. We're not omnipresent and we can't possibly know everything that's going on across the fediverse; we rely on member reports to find and take action on bad behaviour, not just on mastodon.art, but on other instances.Part of hosting and building a safe community is having clear, strong boundaries and enforcing those boundaries -

With a lot of new people joining recently I wanted to make a note about the importance of alt-text; not just for accessibility (which is very important), but also for promoting yourselves as artists and getting your work seen by a wider audience.Because fediverse culture values accessibility, most people won't boost posts that contain images without alt-text, which means your posts will be seen by fewer people. It can seem daunting at first having to describe your images -

Choosing NOT to do that is choosing growth over the safety of your community. It doesn't matter how much extra moderation work you have to put in to try to keep the Nazis out when you have open sign ups - you're choosing to do that and to risk community safety instead of simply closing sign ups.

I'm going to keep on about this; for all of you who want to see fedi grow, for all of you who opine about Black communities leaving or not showing up here at all because of the racism, this is why.Not one day after https://mas.to/@markwyner/115489852379410925 , not one day after saying how sad it made them and how they wish to prevent a recurrence, *another* Nazi account (with white supremacy hate speech and slurs in the username) signed up on mas.to and started directly tagging people with violent images.

Posting other people's art without credit is art theft. This includes photography, though it seems a lot of you don't think it does. Photographers have bought the equipment they're using to take the photo. They've spent time learning the skills necessary to use their equipment and to compose a good photograph. They've spent time processing that photograph. They quite possibly have it for sale somewhere, and quite possibly rely on income from their photography to live.⤵️
