Google is baking Gemini into Maps. Would you switch to the fast, privacy- and battery-friendly Organic Maps? What’s stopping you from switching?https://techcrunch.com/2025/11/05/google-maps-bakes-in-gemini-to-improve-navigation-and-hands-free-use/

@organicmaps"What is stopping you?"As much as I dislike Google/Waze, having live traffic information is great

@organicmaps Seconding live traffic information, same for public transport. Also I find the UX of OMaps sometimes a bit tricky. If I first enter the destination and then go "route to" it's often finicky to chose a different "route from" etc. I think that here, copying GMaps flow would be beneficial. Routing "along" imported GPX would be great as well, this could also be used to have better bbrouter integration: E.g., a custom "bike" profile I've setup in bbrouter -> export To OMaps and than receive navigation instructions to stay on track.I also would like to see "ratings" of restaurants although that's tricky to do in a purely open manner.I love OMaps though, I use it everyday. But often in conjunction with GMaps.

@organicmaps Public transport route finding. I don't need the timetables, just which trams/busses to get on.

@organicmaps > What is stopping you from switching?- No alternative routes to choose from.- In some cases, non-optimal or even plain wrong routes.- I love downloaded maps, for offline navigation, but I don't want to be bothered with downloading them manually (automatic downloading still has issues).- UX issues in Android Auto.

@organicmaps I'd settle for it not routing walking routes through closed/no acess paths, when OSM has this data available. And, related, drawing restricted paths in the same style as unrestricted

@organicmaps I have Organic Maps loaded on both phones, but I haven't made the switch because it just is not as easy for me to use. Now that I am in a foreign country where businesses almost never have their own websites, the reviews being tied into Google Maps also makes a difference.I don't know if OSM has a way for there to be open reviews of places, with photos of the place and menu, their wares, and their hours. You could beat Google in Albania if you included cycle route info, too.

@organicmaps I have always avoided regular Google Maps because Google can't be trusted.I always have all location services off. They only work well for roads and phone or tablet would need a passenger.I have voice only phone plan.I buy paper maps.I have a compass. My system works out of coverage and away from roads.I do have Openstreet map on Linux, but I compare found location with real paper map inc Irish OS.I also have a standalone BT GPS not used for 12 years.

@organicmaps Traffic information and a better time estimate (does it consider traffic lighs?). The time estimation is usually half the actual time it takes to drive somewhere. If it wasn't for that I would've fully migrated already

@organicmaps Why don’t I use Organic Maps?Support for VoiceOver in the iOS app is not great. Lots of badly-labeled and inaccessible elements. More people might use your app if they can use it. I’m not trying to be critical, it’s just the way it is. This is some friendly encouragement to improve.

@organicmaps For live traffic information, there's quite a number of resources for individual countries or cities (https://github.com/graphhopper/open-traffic-collection).Combined with some funding-based opt-in open source life data collection and aggregation, it could be quite useful. But that would be a big initiative and its own non-profit organization...

@fxnn We are not afraid of challenging tasks. That's how Organic Maps and MapsWithMe were born. Any volunteers to lead that important initiative (with our help, of course)?

@leandrokemp That's because turns and traffic lights are not penalized yet for ETA and route estimation (it's tricky). We'll fix that.

@davidkarlas That depends on OpenStreetMap.org and volunteer contributors' activity. One of our goals is to promote OpenStreetMap.org and bring on board more contributors all over the world. That should greatly improve the OSM map data quality.

@meganL Good point. Reviews are planned. Cyclee routes added in OpenStreetMap.org are already supported (enable cycling or hiking routes, and Public Transport routes too, soon, in the top left Layers button). Aren't cycle routes mapped in Albania?

@organicmaps When you ask for directions in Google Maps for Albania, the cycle route option is greyed out. They definitely don't have as much info as OSM has in some respects and it's a place where OSM and apps that use it could gain yardage on Google.Tirana, Albania has some actual protected lanes and ones that are supposed to be protected (armadillos), but...well... And that doesn't even include recommended routes that have no lane but just have less car traffic.

@fr3d - Alternate routes are planned.- Can you please report non-optimal and wrong routes on our GitHub, so we can investigate and fix them? Please check if related OpenStreetMap.org data is correct.- Automatic updates and downloads are planned- Which UX issues do you see in Android Auto? We can't fix them without your feedback. Please check our GitHub and add/update the things you think are important.

@organicmaps I try to use OrganicMaps as much as possible, however, typing in a street address in America doesn't get proper results 95% of the time. (or utilizing what United States users use for a street format)Traffic data is nice; however, that'd require constant internet connectivity when I've downloaded a map that I don't necessarily want. (option to turn off live traffic if you can implement?)

@polishdub Most of the USA address issues are the lack of these addresses in OpenStreetMap.org. If the address is present in OSM, but OM can't find it, please let us know. There's also a plan to integrate other address databases.

@organicmaps I am unsure how schedules are useful without routing. But I don't know the architecture, so maybe it makes sense to do that first.

@organicmaps What you need to do is built in tooling to take a picture of of missing business which takes 3 seconds and then make note on OSM so armchair mapper inputs business into OSM.

@organicmaps there are many, hungry for such high quality data, notice that this can be same person sometimes, on walk in city, snap image of opening hours in Organic maps, and later in evening open OSM.org and resolve note in peace
