I'm going to keep on about this; for all of you who want to see fedi grow, for all of you who opine about Black communities leaving or not showing up here at all because of the racism, this is why.Not one day after https://mas.to/@markwyner/115489852379410925 , not one day after saying how sad it made them and how they wish to prevent a recurrence, *another* Nazi account (with white supremacy hate speech and slurs in the username) signed up on mas.to and started directly tagging people with violent images.

And AS I'M WRITING THIS another account with the same username just got reported, it signed up on mstdn.plus , another open sign up instance, and was tagging people.People keep asking how to prevent this. What tech solutions can be put in place. People mention username filtering coming in the next Masto update.All of those are work-arounds to what is essentially a PEOPLE problem, not a tech problem. The problem is that we, globally, are FAR too lenient when considering safety.

White people, especially white guys, especially cis white guys, have no fucking clue about what safety online looks like because they've never had to experience the kind of targeted abuse a Black queer disabled person will get online. They won't close sign ups because they don't acknowledge the full scale of the harm that seeing a N-slur username actually does to people, they think it's fine to do clean-up after the fact instead of prevention.You want fedi to grow? Let it grow in a way that prioritises the safety of our most marginalised members instead of opening the floodgates to get as many people in as possible then kicking the shitheads out AFTER they've caused a bunch of harm to the tens, hundreds, thousands of marginalised people who caught a glimpse of their hate on their feed.That is not success, that is failure. So now I have to sit here, and the mods of other safe instances have to sit here, today, with the remote accounts page open refreshing it periodically, watching for Nazi usernames to block them as soon as we can, because open sign up instances refuse to do the right thing.

@Curator Thanks for this .We have closed register because we prefer to have some filter, an as we are small, slow growth is better for our resources.Luckily, as we are small, we are no target to harassment, although that could change.As you said, people keep putting faith in technology to resolve social challenges. Instead of creating confidence networks, which would be a benefit in many ways.

@marcelcosta While we're nowhere near the size of the biggest instances on fedi, we're still pretty big, and we have closed sign ups (with the 'give a reason for joining' field enabled) and we grow at a healthy pace.

@Curator Yes."Growth" isn't just a number, too. The word can also mean, do your users grow as people from using your service?"Number go up" is great and all. But if admins fail to prevent people using their platform to regress to online assholes, they really built nothing IMHO.

@Curator I'm sure you mean well and I thank you for doing the work but that is like "well, since {entity} keeps {doing bad thing} I will have to {offset as much as possible}.instead you could (and should) boycott. Its basic logic.If I repeatedly see content (posts, names, etc) which breaks the rules of my instance, from any instance, I will first report, but after a time just block the instance.Only if we are predictable in our doing, we can ask others to trust us.

We're an instance full of marginalised people trying to earn a living through their craft. We try to find a balance between cutting off the worst offenders while not cutting off access to the biggest communities and their potential audiences and income sources; that's why we limit these huge instances instead of blocking. Their inaction is, in many ways, continuously punishing marginalised people.
