yes, people sometimes complain that they have to type `apt` commands on debian linux but have you tried correctly setting up the weird dishwasher in my apartment? (and also to get a replacement geschirrkorb for it, argh)

@whitequark sooo... should i use the separate salt, or is that even damaging when using a fancy multifunction tab

@whitequark ok so that salt is really just very pure sodium chloride? (now i must know if it can be eaten)

@mntmn @whitequark jein. Manufacturers of the multifunction tab say "no you dont need", but manufacturers of dishwashers often say "dosing will be off" or "dont use them", seen both. Also, Berlin Wasserhärte goes brrrr xD

@mntmn my suggestion: try without salt, if it washes like shit, try with saltyour water is hard but not *very* hard, i've had some experience with this but only when using salt, today i think i'd try the above

@whitequark ok i've been using it for 5 years without salt, my lower korb is falling apart from rust (never had this with the bosch in the company), and recently i used "frosch" tabs instead of "finish" and that was a big mistake i think, the inside of dishwasher is now covered in white powdery goo

@mntmn btw I suggest not using "tablets" and squirting a small amount of dishwasher fluid into the compartment instead- cheaper- prevents overdosing- as someone who is disabled by fatigue: takes as much effort (probably less since there's less need to reorder & can be more easily order in bulk)most importantly- washes *way* better

@mntmn have only ever used "finish" (it's cheap enough and worked fine) so that's another thing I can't comment on

@whitequark yeah apparently most people buy the combo tabs and so the market for the separate liquids has shrunk

@mntmn @whitequark dishwasher powder is readily available and cheap though.. Pour a small sprinkle on the door for pre-wash.I'd always load it up with salt, salt is cheaper than detergent and it'll only use it at the rate needed to soften the water

@mntmn @whitequark I don't know anything about this stuff. No salt is a thing here that I know of. Our water is different I suppose. I do know that my mother had white/ yellow calcium deposits stuck and clogging everything and running a few cycles with an upright cup of white vinegar dissolved almost all of it. Her trouble was "pre washing" the dishes we think. The machine delivers a deposit if there is no food waste to act on ot seems.

@mntmn @whitequark The youtuber "Technology Connections" has a very nice video about dishwashers:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jHP942Livy0One of the side effects of using too much detergent is actually white residue, maybe the tabs are too big/concentrated for the hardness of your water

@mntmn Just been there myself. They did away with the baskets there, though. Even the cutlery has a tray.

@mntmn @whitequark Apparently the dissolvable pouches basically put a zillion microplastics down the drain.

@erincandescent @whitequark just wanted to give a small update: thanks for all your helpful stories and hints, i leveled up to multi component dishwasher technician (after doing a thorough deep cleaning of the machine)
