Very thankful for the handful of people we have in this community who report not just the spammers, but the trolls, the sealion-ers, the harassers, the bullies. We're not omnipresent and we can't possibly know everything that's going on across the fediverse; we rely on member reports to find and take action on bad behaviour, not just on mastodon.art, but on other instances.Part of hosting and building a safe community is having clear, strong boundaries and enforcing those boundaries -

which involves defenestrating 🪟 🦵🏻 people who behave counter to our community guidelines. When we see people behaving poorly on other instances, even towards people not in our community, we have to think 'do we want to run the risk that that person will behave in that way to someone in *our* community and to bully, harass, or cause distress to someone who joined our community expecting safety' - the answer is always No.So please, in the course of your daily regular interactions and browsing -

       - of the fediverse, report any bad behaviour you see. Report someone being a bit abusive to someone else. Report that comment that got your hackles up. Report that remark that just didn't feel right. It doesn't matter if you're not sure if it's report-worthy or not; that's our job, as moderators, to decide whether it's bad enough for us to block someone, or maybe we just want to limit their account to mitigate possible harm. And please, check the 'forward report' option if the person you're -

       - reporting is on another instance. It's anonymous; all the remote instance will see is that the report came from mastodon.art, they won't see who made the report (we will, but they won't).Fighting hate speech, bigotry, Nazi-ism, etc. is a community effort that involves fostering a proactive mindset of 'we, collectively, won't tolerate this and it's our responsibility, as individuals and as a community, to make it known that these things are Not Okay'.:QueerCatHeart_Pride:

@Curator Do you also try first to talk to those people (depending on what they did), so they get the chance to understand and think about what they did? Just asking for a better understanding, since it isn't explicitly said in this toot.

@jill If they're on our instance, yes, and it depends on the severity of what they did. If they're on another instance, we'll let the other instance's mod team handle it. If they don't handle it, again depending on the severity of what they did (e.g. if it's a very blatant racist harassing Black folk and the instance mods aren't actioning it), we'll block the whole instance.

@Curator Does that also mean that when I report people who cause Jews distress you’ll act on the report?

@ArneBab I'm gonna generally say yes we action reports of things that make Jewish people uncomfortable, but given the genocide in Gaza and the way some people are trying to frame anyone calling it a genocide and defending Palestinians as antisemitism, there's a caveat of 'it depends'. Was there something specific you wanted to report?

@Curator So the "do we … risk … that that person will … cause distress … always No" does not apply to distress caused to Jews.

@Curator there is a caveat. So it’s not *always* when it comes to Jews. You may want to phrase your rules more precisely.

@ArneBab you may want to get back to me when you're gonna engage in good faith, or don't get back to me at all.

@Curator I engaged in good faith. In hope.I had hoped that the "always" you wrote in your rules actually meant always.I asked because in the past I noted that for reports I wrote about behavior that caused distress to Jews I did not see action from your side. But not every moderation action is publicly visible, so there was a possibility that you did act.A "yes" as reply to my question ("when I report people who cause Jews distress you’ll act on the report?") would have made it clear.

@ArneBab If you want to know if we acted on a specific report, and if we didn't then why, then ask me if we acted on a specific report, and if we didn't then why.
