BTW if you're looking for an open hardware, repairable laptop made by a small team in berlin with no venture capital, maybe MNT Reform Next could be interesting for you: https://www.crowdsupply.com/mnt/mnt-reform-next

@mntmn they both look very neat! I really wouldn't mind having the small version..can I ask a potentially stupid question though? i couldn't find anything about it on the website, but are there any plans for a more budget-friendly option? the milled aluminium case and mech keyboard look premium and slick asf, but i think a solid ABS plastic case and rubberdomes would be good enough for me, and 1k+ is a bit much for me to splurge on a super neat looking device that I technically don't need 😅

@mntmn Well, it "works". It's just not "done". The prototype can be seen in the photos. There is a 3D printed stem which you stick through a hole in the keyboard PCB. The trackpoint sensor can be found in different varieties online. Some of the keycaps needed to be modified of course. Remaining problem is the fragility of the stem which is made of PLA. A thinner stem would be better and would avoid having to file some material away at the corner of the switches as well.

@mntmn These look really nice, but they cost about triple what I just paid ($640 USD) for a 14" Dell laptop with Intel Core 7 150U CPU/16GB RAM/1TB SSD, power adapter, and a Windows 11 Home license, which will be arriving tomorrow and will be a dual-boot Linux/Windows machine.

@mntmn They're really cool laptops but the costs just makes them prohibitively expensive. I'd much rather spend 250 euros on a super portable uconsole by clockwork which is just as open source and also has 4g connectivity.

@07_Sevn sure thing, but just to clarify also for others, uConsole is not open hardware, that means the electronics and case design files are not available under a permissive license, so you can't make your own uConsole or fork it, unlike MNT Reform series devices, where KiCAD projects and case design files are published as open source (CERN OHL).

@faustino no, i don't want anything to do with framework stuff. this question came up a lot in the past and i always said no, and some people didn't get why, and now in the light of recent events maybe a few more people get why.

@mntmn Is there any chance of a system coming with something faster than the Rockchip RK3588? I think the 3588 is from 2022 as well so it is getting a bit long in the tooth! It is probably fine for doing some browsing and youtube, but from what I can tell it's about the same performance as an Intel N100, so we're talking about netbook performance I think?I would very much like to like it more! If mnt makes something way more expensive and faster I'd be super interested!

@mntmn That does seem like a nice bump up from the 3588. About 25% faster? Thanks for the link! When that goes on sale with 32 or 64GB of RAM I'll consider it!EDIT: Actually it looks like the CQ8750S is a much bigger bump than the QCS6490. Looking forwards to it!Thanks again!

@mntmn I'm looking at more repairable devices, and have had my eyes on your upcoming device for a while. My main point of interest in this is the "Rockchip RK3588" SoC. How is the performance on it when it comes to 2D games (like terraria, Necesse etc..)? I play a bit on the side now a days, so that's something I personally would like to know.

@mntmn Hey, quick question. Now that the MNT reform next is coming up. Will the current device still be in consideration when it comes to newer compute models? I'm loving the "CHONK" of the current version, but I don't want to take away a possible future "upgrade".

@mntmn Have you ever considered making a modular, cartridge-loaded powerbank?Basically the battery system of ye olde Thinkpads as a stand-alone gadget you plug into a ATX PSU socket or USB-PD port: preferably with an internal battery to keep the computer going while you swap cell packs.Would be extremely helpful for anyone trying to build a freeform portable computer, especially if they wish to use desktop-grade components.
