@darktable Do you mean accepting chat bot-assisted code? Or are you thinking of adding a chat-based image generator so I can avoid getting off the sofa and straining myself taking actual photos with my camera? The word "AI" is kind of a skunked term. A large portion of the image processing operations in there already were, at various points in time, categorized as "AI".

@darktable Object detection for automatic masking could be cool.

@darktable AI is too broad of a topic to decide if we should add it to darktable or not.AI masking, as an example, can massively help better isolare a subject or light the background. At the moment one can rely on external masking softwares to do it, which can be ok but slow.Another way AI can improve workflows can be adapting styles using certain parameters: say I have a orange-teal style but I want to apply it to my landscape shots, a filter based on image context will help.

@darktable I could imagine myself using a new tool to remove power wires or something else. Like an automated retouch module

@darktable genAI is a disgrace. But masking might be a usage that brings value, depending on the ethic of the AI

@darktableI think itncould be interesting, but only a a specific tool. GenAI, like generative fill, or automating parameters, those are computationally expensive, unethically sourced, and yield terrible results. Maybe specific tasks like masking, or image categorization, or if there are even more specific tooling that could be made (ethically too would be great) would be very nice.

@darktable I think this topic is too broad. I would love automated removal, if we call that ai, and/or maybe some locally ran other stuff I cannot think of, but nothing with remote servers, etc.

@darktable if AI means LLMs, of course “No”.In a broader context, when ML-based tools and small statistical models are used to help other algorithms to classify objects or evaluate thresholds or predict values estimations, why not? If using statistical methods will improve graphics-based tools, it could be very useful.
