There should be a word for it: the feeling of disappointment / sadness when you realize interesting people you got to know on the Fediverse have since decamped to Bluesky.Of course, there must be valid reasons for it. Still, this makes me a little sad.I have a dormant Bluesky account and from time to time I check in and see them posting so much there. Not me. Why? I don't trust a place funded by Crypto Bros -> https://www.blockchaincapital.com/portfolioI'm 1000% ALL IN on the Fediverse, not going anywhere ❤️

@_elena I just ask people there, who really don't see a problem / risk in Bluesky, to turn on the fediverse bridge and tell them they can follow me via https://bsky.app/profile/erikkemp.voltnederland.org which is just a bridge of my account here :)

@erikkemp I'm aware of it and I even did it in the past to bridge my GoToSocial account. It's just that the culture of the two places is SO DIFFERENT. Bluesky reminds me of the old Twitter days and a desire of broadcasting messages to friends and strangers with the ultimate goal of being seen. By as many people as possible. The Fediverse to me feels more about genuine connections, sans ego. Learning, conversing...I realize this is a highly subjective personal take / I respect differences

@_elena Mm I never experienced old Twitter so I don't really know what that vibe was or what the Bluesky vibe is now :PI want to follow some people and if they are really keen on not entering the open social web this is a way to still see their posts. I guess it's only people who I already know, or who pop up here by others sharing their stuff. It's only 14 people at the moment though. The fediverse to me is both curated information streams (broadcasts) and genuine connections, I guess.

@_elena Maybe because interesting people think they have to stay interesting and that they can only achieve that by reaching more people with their own thoughts, instead of engaging in conversation with people and learning about other perspectives? And they see that on Bluesky they get more likes, shares, impressions, compared to Mastodon, and move there?Just speculating here, I don't actually know their reasoning.

@_elenaI think we should distinguish social network (that’s how we call it in Brazil) and social media. The 1st one is were we interact with other people and the 2nd is a place to seek followers and to follow influencers. There’s a consensus that social media is somehow the only way to be online. Everyone centralized in one place. I desagree. I think we need sense of collectivity, not an ego market 🤔And, of course, as you said, it’s hard to beleave on the future of a social bigtech 🤷🏼♂️

@_elena I've been on Twitter and moved to Mastodon entirely the moment Elon got "elected". I'm just gonna skip the BlueSky entirely because I already know its fate is the same as Twitter because investors are involved and they always fuck up everything. Mastodon has none of that and will just remain what it is. I'm okay with that as I just need unbiased social network without any Ai bullshit.

@_elena The character limit on Bluesky’s apparently 300, on Mastodon it’s 500. A few extra words can make a massive difference when expressing an opinion or making a statement. If people want to gossip, they’ll use Bluesky and X. If they want to speak, they’ll use Mastodon.I’m glad you’re staying. You’re clearly a woman of conviction, and I seriously admire you for that.

@_elena it's herd behavior. Simple as that. People have a tendency to instincly go where there's already (many) people - that applies to social media.Besides Mastodon I'm also on Blusky. Why? Because there's many people already there, and things I share/comment on can thus reach a larger audience.Although I still prefer Mastodon for the same reason you stated. Lack of trust.

@_elena @erikkemp @kims As someone who likes the Mastodon community, Bluesky is a better product for most people (I don’t even have an account there). Mastodon naturally filters out non-tech users. Every time I switch “timelines”, there’s effectively a litmus test you’re faced with.If you’re smart enough to know the “local timeline” has nothing to do with geography, you’ll likely stick around more. But, to most people, the “local timeline” is just a bunch of random people. When you switch to the “federated timeline”, it’s another random bunch of users which makes no general usability sense.

@lifewithtrees @erikkemp @_elena Yeah definitely feels more challenging to use Mastodon for visibility. Also, I think there's a technical/logistic hurdle that needs to be overcome to get the most out of Mastodon, mainly being aware of what servers your home server is federated with and how that impacts visibility (though there are others). With traditional social media you don't have to worry about this.

@erikkemp @_elena it is a delight when I see someone has replied to one of my posts via the bridge but it happens so infrequently for me I hardly notice any difference in not using the bridge at all. It’s so easy to network with strangers on the fediverse, I don’t know what I’m missing on bluesky. I probably fit perfectly into the mastodon bucket but I don’t see exactly why bluesky is supposedly “better” than mastodon other than you can see a more accurate count of boosts and likes I guess. Seems like a silly trade off.To be fair, bluesky has more controls on how visible and accessible your posts are, including the ability to turn off replies so I do wish that Mastodon would add those kind of controls.

@erikkemp @_elena That’s what I see as well. I have been on Bluesky for a year and rarely spend more than 10-15 minutes there each trip maybe a few times a month. Seems like conversations there aren’t common. But it’s a place a member can post a long thread with multiple parts. And if one wants to connect people to their own website. I’m not seeing small communities form there or small groups of people who chat often. I love it here on Fediverse with many so-called introverts chatting daily and people of diverse areas and interests. Rarely see any trolls or worse here. And good information posts here many of the most “popular” sorts also have a bsky account and some bridge. But those I follow most do not neglect us on Fediverse.

@_elena @phanpy Honestly I don't even think it's that much more to explain. Yes, you have to pick a server, but the decision isn't really nearly as complex as people make it out to be. Beyond that you basically treat it just like those.I have a friend who is into the kinds of hobbyist stuff that you see a lot of on the Fediverse. I've tried a billion times to get them to come over but for some reason they won't. I mean, you don't pay to sign up or anything, so why not at least create an account and look around? I think that person may even still be on X, which is potentially actively a danger to them.People just have sort of a kneejerk at the concept of change, even if the change isn't necessarily large I guess.

Many of them opened G+ accounts, but then drifted back to FB because of the number of friends they had there who were not going to leave. @_elena The urge to engage on Blueksy is growing stronger as the number of people that I know/accounts I want to follow increases every day.And I was hoping Threads federating would help Mastodon, but that's been a huge fail so far. The number of accounts that've federated seems very limited, implementation is taking too long/remains mostly one way, Europe still can’t, Meta is beyond problematic, and a ton of accounts that were quite active on Threads have been moving to Bsky too.

@_elena It’s rare but it happens to me. Mainly on tech/cybersecurity related topics.Sadly the the functionality of being able to DM the bridge someone’s bluesky handle and then the bridge sending them a DM on bluesky has never resulted in a creator on bluesky actually bridging their account here. The only person I know that has done it is TechnologyConnections and he just used to be here before leaving sadly.I’d prefer that everyone was all in the fediverse but I try to be pragmatic. Bluesky is essentially a ticking time bomb of enshittification as its open fire hose design makes it easy to use as an end user but prohibitively expensive to fully self-participate on the network. I could theoretically move my PDS to another relay but I have to rely on a benevolent benefactor like “Free Our Feeds” to host it and not enshittify because I can’t afford to relay the millions of activities that I don’t actually care about.
