       @dansup @pixelfed Is there good and not resource-heavy LLMs that run on Android/iOS, capable of doing this sort of thing?Alt text generation is pretty heavy on resources, and even my AMD Ryzen desktop with RX 6800 XT takes some time when using LLAVA with ollama.And client-side generation must be implemented on each client...Maybe, it's better to provide API and different backends?

       @dansup even on-device, the generated descriptions are often not helpful to people who rely on them. it’s a very bad look if you claim to care about accessibility.

       @dansup I’m glad it’s not the only aspect. To be clear, I do think you care! And that is a great feature (I use the same in Ivory!).Your post does imply the main thing stopping you from adding “AI” generated descriptions is a privacy concern : “Unless we can do that on device”.But even on-device “AI” generated alt text sends a clear signal about accessibility priorities.  One that would also be at odds with Pixelfed’s vibe, IMO.
