New: Why is Meta adding fediverse interoperability to Threads?Threads' most recent update allows people on Threads to follow people on the #fediverse, albeit with some significant caveats. But one simple question has bugging me for a long while: Why? Why is Meta adding interoperability to their platform?https://fediversereport.com/why-is-meta-adding-fediverse-interoperability-to-threads/

@fediversereport I go further in my speculation. I think the opt-in requirement for Threads federation stands out as a signal of where Meta is going. I can't find the quote, but Mosseri has said that the opt-in requirement is to protect their users' privacy, security, and IP rights and defend against spam and abuse.I call bullshit. Meta has always been crap (intentionally and unintentionally) at those things, even on their own fully-controlled platforms.

@fediversereport Since day one, Zuckerberg has been worried someone might steal his social media crown. Probably because Facebook was stolen by him in the first place. It's in their DNA to look out for what is next and to try and dominate that space, either through buying the company (Instagram Wattsapp) or investing in stuff like the Metaverse. This interest in the Fediverse is part of that same pattern. This image is from the original "little red book" created by Facebook for employees.

@fediversereport besides "Embrace, extend, extinguish?"I mean, Meta's motivations for such things seem like they should be obvious by now.

@fediversereport if Meta adds fediverse interoperability with their flavour of functionality it is for the sole purpose of putting its weight of users into the ecosystem. When enough of the traffic relies on this functionality Meta will try to enforce it onto the whole ActivityPub with threatening to cut those off who don't obey their rules. Those who then rely on this traffic to generate income will see it as a threat to their livelyhood and probably follow suit.

@fediversereport One reason I can think of is gathering input for machine learning which is not complete mainstream and mediocre.I’m far from elitism, but in general I find that most toots have more value and relevance than the (dis)information flow on other platforms.

@fediversereport One reason i will only feel safe, if i still can block complete instances like Threads or be part of an instance, that has deferderated already. If i wanted Meta to have easy access to my data or their minions to be in contact with me, i would be on a Meta plattform.Meta is like a Tumor that wants to overgrow and grow through everything and poison and take from it.
