There is no world where this is a right and proper thing to do, ever. “Within the next several months, Nevada plans to launch a generative AI system powered by Google that will analyze transcripts of unemployment appeals hearings and issue recommendations to human referees about whether or not claimants should receive benefits.        @Timo_Micro we had a similar sort of thing in Australia which ended up in a Royal Commission. Look up RoboDebt if you’re interested. And that was before the big AI craze.

       @Rory29 Clearly they didn’t look at the fallout from Australia’s (pre AI) Robo-Debt system (algorithmic benefits recovery leading to suicides, and eventually a Royal Commission in to the system).

       @david It's the conflict between spending the least amount of money that the state possibly can in doing good for the people up against paying top dollar to the contractors that provide services to the state (and who also make campaign donations to state politicians). For previous examples, see every decision about American highway spending.

       @david though it's not much of a surprise since even human-operated support lines have been constructed: to deflect responsibility and fracture the room for support workers to make decisions, in a way that makes it virtually impossible even for the support to give the customer anythingLLM's shortcomings are a feature in that field

       @david @inthehands What stands out to me is how this is just the wrong tool for the job, and NV insists on using it. Generative “AI” isn’t about making decisions, it’s about spewing what it thinks you want to hear. It’s like using a tall building to stir eggs for an omelette.*and a not-very-good tall building at that.
