       If HS2 was a motorway, it would have been built by now! But because new rail projects are minutely analysed with this "value for the taxpayer" nonsense. If road building was held to the same level of scrutiny, a sizable amount of the road network would still be cart tracks.

       Most computerised systems are vulnerable to solar storms. Another one like the Carrington Event of 1859 will put us back in the Middle Ages for weeks if not months. We are not prepared.

       Theatre Critics should give a review of the last performance as well as the first, to compare how the play has matured over time.  Useless for theatregoers, but useful for all those involved in the production.

       The large windows on London buses are great in the winter as they act like greenhouses. They are terrible in the summer for the same reason. Between April and October they should be coated in a mirrored wrap that reflects away most light, keeping passengers cooler.

       Look, you can have low taxation or you can have functioning public services. You can't have both. Lots of people, including the UK government, seem to have forgotten this fact. Taxation isn't theft. It's the foundation of society.
