Fax isn't the only legacy communications technology that ought to be banned. SMS should be killed off, too. It's overwhelmingly used for scams, not legitimate messaging. Legitimate messaging has moved on.

@anon_opin I disagree. Text messaging is perfectly adequate for most people's needs, and the various messaging systems since then have 1. Enshittified in several ways, including tying people into separate systems, and 2. They often cost more, whereas SMS is invariably very cheap or free nowadays. 3. Increased the size of the message, meaning there is a slight disbenefit, mainly to the environment.

@anon_opin: sorry, no. Both of these standards are still widely used.There's the RCS as a potential replacement for the latter, but it's still not a default standard of built–in texting.

@anon_opin if you think that WhatsApp is a replacement for SMS/RCS/Text you can get to f*CK. That shit should be shut down or taken away from Meta so it can be a good independent trusted standard run as a not for profit service. I know there's open source alternatives but for a lot of the world WhatsApp is totally dominant and ingrained which as it is, is really dangerous.

@anon_opin Fax is wonderful and I'm sad it's disused. It moves a sheet of image from one place to another. Scribble scribble now you have my artful scribble. It's language agnostic. 5 year olds can use it. It was fun until grownups ruined it.SMS is electronic note passing. Not it's fault it mutated into the bloated bag of shit it is now.At the time, I kinda loved my two way pager (early 90s). Heading out the door to some place, i had a command line tool they texted me names, or numbers, or address, as I walked out the door bleep! I had it on my pocket by the time I got outside. Also the deferred temporality of it set expectation; is text CALL YOU WHEN I GET THERE or HEADING THERE NOW that sort of thing. You didn't expect instant replies,turn around could be an hour or a day. It was very nice. Tools have social aspects and need to confirm to social needs, not drive them. And corporations ruin everything.
