Prospective quantum bubble watchers: you will see the phrase "QUANTUM SUPREMACY" leading all PR pushesthis means QUANTUM SUPREMACY in doing some tiny thing that may - or may not - impress somebody, but is absolutely not a real-world applicationwe have achieved QUANTUM SUPREMACY in useless shit

@davidgerard Have done a bit of digging, my understanding is that even the headline "Quantum computer breaks RSA" is a) Only 40-bit and b) Only on very specific hardware which includes a bunch of additional classical components for "priming" (i.e. it's still smoke and mirrors)

@davidgerard Every so often I debate whether or not to polish off the knowledge from that quantum computing class I took to see if I can get in nice and early in the next grift cycle

@davidgerard IBM’s claims were debunked in the most funny way ever, using C64https://www.tomshardware.com/tech-industry/quantum-computing/commodore-64-outperforms-ibms-quantum-systems-1-mhz-computer-said-to-be-faster-more-efficient-and-decently-accurate

@davidgerard not loving the vibes word "supremacy" has accrued within tech what with all those guys lining up to support the white nationalist president

@davidgerard Once again, a quantum system has been shown to be better at providing statistical information on a quantum system than a simulation of the same system... literally all "quantum supremacy" claims are just the system "modeling" itself (or a subset of itself).

@davidgerard Quantum Computing is a research project, I quite heavily Capital intensive one that doesn't involve anything public facing

@davidgerard i wonder what other supremacy movements run in these circles, we think, shortly before taking a bong rip so hard that our neighbors call the fire department

@davidgerard I admit that QUANTUM SUPREMACY seems like it is something very RAD and COOL, but I am yet to see something useful come out of it

@davidgerardGiven how much of human activity is useless shit, I think "quantum supremacy in useless shit" might actually be useful?

@davidgerard "The Quantum Supremacy" sounds like the name of a spy novel you'd find in an airport bookstore.I do like that it's, like, a very tiny supremacy. Very small - just a single tiny unit of supremacy.

@Jer and it turns out "QUANTUM SUPREMACY" means "at last an actual qubit solved an artificial problem faster than the simulator"

@davidgerard So it IS a very tiny amount of supremacy!
