[MATCH] Just checking out IRC on sdf. I idle on
[MATCH] the following channels:
[MATCH] - #vim
[MATCH] - #anonradio
[MATCH] - #gopher
[MATCH] - #hurtdesk
[MATCH]
[MATCH] The topic on #hurtdesk is funny:
[MATCH] Have you tried turning it On and Off
[MATCH] again? | Noob: blah blah blah? Leet:
[MATCH] Did you RTFM? Noob: [yes/No]. Leet:
[MATCH] Then why are you asking me?
[MATCH]
[MATCH] Reminded me of this little comic:
[MATCH] https://www.reddit.com/r/ProgrammerHumor/comments/xeo5ab/junior_vs_senior/
[MATCH]
[MATCH] I've experienced this having stood on
[MATCH] both sides. As a junior: keep asking
[MATCH] questions, no matter what. In the
[MATCH] beginning it can be a little difficult
[MATCH] to determine what an "allowed" question
[MATCH] is, you'll get there and don't stress
[MATCH] too much. I've seen juniors becoming
[MATCH] quiet and stop progressing due to a
[MATCH] fractured ego. Don't let that happen to
[MATCH] you.
[MATCH]
[MATCH] As a senior: be firm when you need
[MATCH] to be, try to be kind and affirming
[MATCH] otherwise to get the best results.
[MATCH]
[MATCH] To find balance is a challenge.

[MATCH]
[MATCH] I'm tinkering here watching the Island
[MATCH] of Dr. Moreau (1996) starring Marlon
[MATCH] Brando and Val Kilmer on the side.
[MATCH]
[MATCH] I've never seen it but it must be good
[MATCH] since there's a Simpsons episode about
[MATCH] it (probably the original one from
[MATCH] 1977).
[MATCH]
[MATCH] Today I read that Val Kilmer was
[MATCH] difficult to work with and Marlon
[MATCH] Brando said to him: "You're confusing
[MATCH] your talent with the size of
[MATCH] your paycheck". I like Val Kilmer
[MATCH] nonetheless and think he's fantastic.
[MATCH] People with oversized egos sometimes
[MATCH] need it to do the job they're doing.
[MATCH]
[MATCH] Politicians are good negative examples
[MATCH] for that. Egos so bloated people can't
[MATCH] believe it's not true because that
[MATCH] would mean they're delusional (the
[MATCH] politicians).
[MATCH]
[MATCH] A few words about the phlog. I like
[MATCH] those artsy .nfo files and will try
[MATCH] to come up with something cool every
[MATCH] now and then. Maybe the text will be
[MATCH] the same in phlog and in ansi_phlog,
[MATCH] I don't know, yet but the textwidth
[MATCH] will be different. For ansi_phlog it's
[MATCH] 80, 39 for phlog. It looks great
[MATCH] in bombadillo, somehow not in gopher
[MATCH] anymore, don't know why, yet.
[MATCH]
[MATCH] I noticed that if I update some files
[MATCH] in here I'm shown at the top in
[MATCH] GOPHERSPHERE but there's not really
[MATCH] anything new. That's why I'm going to
[MATCH] let the Bunny tell you, if something is
[MATCH] going on here.
[MATCH]
[MATCH] "He's a five finger man, like you" I
[MATCH] missed a good part of the movie now,
[MATCH] let's rewind. I hope I get it this
[MATCH] time.

[MATCH]
[MATCH] I'm not opposing technological
[MATCH] advancements here (well, maybe I am).
[MATCH] The problem with complexity that
[MATCH] reaches a point where it becomes
[MATCH] unmangeable for most people is that
[MATCH] people become unable to govern
[MATCH] themeselves.
[MATCH]
[MATCH] To me it feels as if a very large part
[MATCH] of humanity is degraded to a group
[MATCH] of children that cannot decide for
[MATCH] themselves.
[MATCH]
[MATCH] "With AI we opened pandora's box and
[MATCH] now there's nothing we can do about
[MATCH] it."
[MATCH]
[MATCH] ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
[MATCH]
[MATCH] Does not seem like completely new
[MATCH] societal problems. Rather like old,
[MATCH] well known ones.
[MATCH]
[MATCH] Do you already see Skynet or maybe a
[MATCH] golden age for humanity?
[MATCH]
[MATCH] Drop me a line, will ya?

[MATCH] I don't pretend that I don't care what
[MATCH] people think about me. Well, at least
[MATCH] not here. Otherwise, fake it, till you
[MATCH] make it, right?
[MATCH]
[MATCH] Hardships and rejection leave traces
[MATCH] that - without the appropriate mental
[MATCH] hygiene - can plague you forever.
[MATCH]
[MATCH] But what to do with those ten years old
[MATCH] gigabytes of logs? I wouldn't mind
[MATCH] uncompressing and examining. Unless
[MATCH] there's a really good reason to keep it
[MATCH] in the dusty and musty archive laced
[MATCH] with cobwebs, burn it all down.
[MATCH]
[MATCH] You will probably forget something
[MATCH] important but it seems easier to
[MATCH] figure that out somehow than dealing
[MATCH] with the old crap. Start fresh. A
[MATCH] minimal .vimrc, comfortable but not
[MATCH] overwhelming. At least that's what I
[MATCH] want to do. And start rotating the
[MATCH] logs!
[MATCH]
[MATCH] So, I was really interested if anybody
[MATCH] reads this at all. I still don't know
[MATCH] but at least I can see that this
[MATCH] little phlog is accessed (probably by a
[MATCH] crawler of some kind).
[MATCH]
[MATCH] With a little entry in your gophermap
[MATCH] you can execute the date command and
[MATCH] log the output to a file. Like so:
[MATCH] =date >> /path/to/your/logfile
[MATCH]
[MATCH] I have a bash script to manage my
[MATCH] log files, you can find it under
[MATCH] programming. Also you can see the
[MATCH] latest output in "Public access log"
[MATCH] under my About section. It is updated
[MATCH] when I log in.

[MATCH] to make the .txt files under /phlog

[MATCH] under ==== Search ====. The arguments
[MATCH] you pass will be the search terms. Pass
[MATCH] as many as you like.

[MATCH] You can find the script under

[MATCH]
[MATCH] I'm writing a perl script to update my
[MATCH] main gophermap. Can't do cron jobs,
[MATCH] yet (arpa, I'm coming), otherwise I'd
[MATCH] just update it periodically.
[MATCH]
[MATCH] You can find it under

[MATCH]
[MATCH] Soon, my Perl script will detect a

[MATCH] somewhere so the world will know.
[MATCH]
[MATCH] I added a like. It's the first article

[MATCH] This text was supposed to go into the
[MATCH] INTRO section of bboard. I'm not
[MATCH] allowed to do that, yet but this here
[MATCH] works, so ...
[MATCH]
[MATCH] Hi all, I'm scnemo (snake_case_nemo).
[MATCH]
[MATCH] I recently read an article about BSD
[MATCH] systems and sdf.org was mentioned. I
[MATCH] was here before a long time ago when I
[MATCH] could hardly type. It makes so much
[MATCH] more sense now.
[MATCH]
[MATCH] Computers did not really concern me
[MATCH] until I was 19 years old. I bought one
[MATCH] because I thought it could become
[MATCH] useful and basically everyone at my
[MATCH] school had one. Catching viruses was
[MATCH] very easy with a freshly installed
[MATCH] Windows XP, no security and a 56k modem
[MATCH] to connect to the internet. Remember
[MATCH] the Sasser worm?
[MATCH]
[MATCH] "You need a firewall", they told me.
[MATCH] "What's that?"
[MATCH]
[MATCH] And that's where it started. I became
[MATCH] interested in computers and moved from
[MATCH] Windows to FreeBSD (of which I ordered
[MATCH] a CD delivered to me by mail! It was
[MATCH] 4.0 I believe).
[MATCH]
[MATCH] The quiet and sincere engagement with a
[MATCH] text console still brings me joy.
[MATCH]
[MATCH] I never used gopher before, read about
[MATCH] it but wasn't interested. That changed
[MATCH] after reading a few lines on here. I'd
[MATCH] like to mention the user but I forgot
[MATCH] and I don't want to search for it right
[MATCH] now. I may get back to it another time.
[MATCH]
[MATCH] The honesty in the user's report of
[MATCH] what seemed to be a usual night out
[MATCH] without the need of impressing anyone
[MATCH] or seeking for validation but just
[MATCH] reflecting on his life captured me.
[MATCH] That's where I want to be. What an
[MATCH] interesting place.
[MATCH]
[MATCH] Here's another one I really liked:
[MATCH] gopher://sdf.org:70/0/users/agk/2026-03-19-kycomp.txt
[MATCH]
[MATCH] I'm simplifying things in my life.
[MATCH] Simplifying my computing and online
[MATCH] activity makes up a large part of that.
[MATCH] It means bringing out the trash and
[MATCH] focusing on things that have substance
[MATCH] and integrity.
[MATCH]
[MATCH] * So I wrote to membership to get an
[MATCH] arpa subscription by sending crypto.
[MATCH] No answer, yet.
[MATCH] * Asked on irc, some op said I'd have
[MATCH] to wait. Sent 3$ via paypal. No
[MATCH] validation. Forgot to mention it's
[MATCH] for validation, just wrote my
[MATCH] username.
[MATCH] * Paypal email address differs from the
[MATCH] one used to ask about crypto.
[MATCH] * Will they know? Later found out,
[MATCH] it's 6$ *facepalm*, I'll just wait.
[MATCH]
[MATCH] The waiting is the hardest part. Don't
[MATCH] forget to like and subscribe.
