       f6k: thanks! fold did the job perfectly, specifically with the -s option 
       that breaks lines on the last available space before the specified 
       length rather than in the middle of a word.
       
       I prefer emacs for editing, though I'm open to suggestions if there's 
       something better for gopher pages.
