I'm so sorry to hear that about your dad, Chuck.

What you wrote is eerily similar to what I've said about
my dad. While my dad didn't die from cancer, Covid was
not kind to him, preventing the family from visiting him
every day and making sure he ate.

When my dad was finally cleared to go home, he was so
thin that, like your own dad, he looked like he had been
in a Nazi concentration camp. To his credit, he did try
to eat, but couldn't get any food down. It was only a
matter of days before he went mostly unconscious, and
then he died a few days later.

That's partly the reason I want my mom to eat. If my
dad had eaten, he probably would have lasted at least
a few more years. When Covid hit at the rehab place,
the family couldn't visit. People reassured us that
the best place he could be was in the rehab facility
surrounded by nurses and doctors, but they got Covid
       too, short-staffing the entire facility.

So when we finally saw my dad again, we realized that
the staff wasn't ensuring that he was eating. But then,
how could they? They only had half their staff, so
they couldn't spare the time to dote on my dad to
ensure that he's eating, like his family would do when
       we could visit every day.

So that's why I want my mom to eat. If she can
willingly eat, she'll probably have more strength
and enjoy life more. And of course, her family
will be happier about that, too!
