a tiny phlog experiment in Gopherspace

Wed, 09 Sep 2026 @ 13:35 UTC (#30)
Replaced nexmsg with "nps services" on nex.runbsd.io; send
'help' for menu.
Thu, 13 Aug 2026 @ 00:20 UTC (#29)
Rewrote anoNex, the inted-managed reply script for serving Nex
content, in Kornshell after noticing the Lagrange client was
capable of displaying/playing images and audio files.

Finally got a proper trail ride in yesterday; been so hot and
smokey have hardly felt like doing much of anything. Also been
working on Nex stuff; found an easy way to allow any text file
to act as a virtual index so as to activate any rocket links
contained within.
Thu, 16 Jul 2026 @ 18:16 UTC (#27)
Nearly all healed up from the mtb bike crash though probably a
rib was slightly cracked. Only hurts if pushed on. Still stupid
hot; been in the 90s (F) nearly all month.
Thu, 09 Jul 2026 @ 01:31 UTC (#26)
The last of the 3 flicker fledgelings exited the nesting cavity
yesterday. 2 females and a male. Neighbor reported seeing Mom
and one of the fledgelings in her yard this morning so we may
see a bit more of them for a bit.
Wed, 01 Jul 2026 @ 02:27 UTC (#25)
Managed to crash again on a trail ride, pretty much the same
way as last time on a curve I've riden 100+ times. Oh well.
Mon, 29 Jun 2026 @ 19:23 UTC (#24)
Been quite hot and smokey lately. Fires in Utah and western
Colorado are the primary source of the latter. Not a good
harbinger given Summer has just started.
Tue, 16 Jun 2026 @ 03:34 UTC (#23)
Sounds like there'll be a new crop of flickers emerging from
the nesting cavity they made last year in the slowly dying
backyard apple tree. It's right next to the patio so we have
been watching the progress for several weeks now, great fun!
Sat, 06 Jun 2026 @ 19:26 UTC (#22)
Went all in on Nex with a public-facing station at
nex.runbsd.io and a messaging service (NPS-like) to receive
mail on.
Sun, 31 May 2026 @ 23:10 UTC (#21)
Added some NeX stuff to the gopher hole, updated NexBro browser
+ anoNex "server" for NetBSD, currently running on an ancient
M-100 iTuner MiniBox.
Sun, 24 May 2026 @ 18:34 UTC (#20)
Got caught in a sooty dust storm on a recent road trip to the
Texas panhandle. Ash from a recent grass fire combined with
whipped up dirt cutting visibility down to about 2 car lengths.
Basically followed a big semi truck through the worst of it.
Glad it was a fairly low-traffic route.

Been revisiting the NeX protocol and discovered a very usable
server can be implemented, at least on NetBSD, using fingerd(8)
and a kornshell script, both native. May try replacing the ksh
script with AWK.
Sun, 10 May 2026 @ 20:00 UTC (#18)
Just got back from a nearly 3K mile road trip during which we
were driving every day. The cessation of constant motion seems
to have induced a bit of vertigo. Hopefully it passes in a day
or two.
Tue, 28 Apr 2026 @ 13:15 UTC (#17)
The AWK workshop went pretty well with 2-5 participants for the
six meetups. The preparation was much more time-consuming than
anticipated but it was still fun to do and learned a few things
along the way.
Wed, 22 Apr 2026 @ 13:37 UTC (#16)
A wild turkey showed up in the neighborhood recently, first
I've ever seen in the front range area. Usually if there's one
there's a flock but this one seems alone. Interesting birds.
Thu, 16 Apr 2026 @ 21:19 UTC (#15)
FINALLY figured out how to get NetBSD's Wireguard
implementation to work with ProtonVPN; was a long strange trip.
Wed, 08 Apr 2026 @ 23:20 UTC (#14)
For any SDFers with an interest in AWK there will be an
informal workshop in one of the Coms starting this Saturday
(3x/wk, 2-3 wks). See bboard CODING post.
Thu, 19 Mar 2026 @ 18:57 UTC (#13)
80+F in mid-March.. nice bike weather but still I fear exiting
the Holocene is gonna be a wild ride.
Thu, 12 Mar 2026 @ 13:13 UTC (#12)
Got interested in Tcl recently and have been working through an
old book by Welsh; slightly picky syntax but can see it being
useful.
Sun, 08 Feb 2026 @ 03:37 UTC (#11)
Made a Gopher-based poll just for yucks today - vote for your
favorite OS (not very original but it was what came to mind).
Wed, 21 Jan 2026 @ 21:34 UTC (#10)
Fingers crossed that RTC can continue on in some form and best
wishes to the current caretaker.
Fri, 19 Dec 2025 @ 00:54 UTC (#9)
Currently reading B. Kernighan's book UNIX: A History and a
Memoir. Surprisingly engaging. Info and errata:
https://www.cs.princeton.edu/~bwk/memoir.html
Wed, 03 Dec 2025 @ 22:04 UTC (#8)
Finally got around to adding sed-style substitution capability
to BottlePost; understanding regex is so important to keeping
AWK code clean.
Sun, 30 Nov 2025 @ 01:43 UTC (#7)
Got our first snow of the season, 2nd latest according to the
historical records. Barely an inch but it counts. The backyard
squirrels in their fat suits looked vindicated in their peanut
obsession.
Sun, 09 Nov 2025 @ 16:02 UTC (#6)
Looks like the snow will be arriving rather late this year.
Great weather for trail riding; probably get a few rides in
next week.
Sat, 18 Oct 2025 @ 18:02 UTC (#5)
Okay, new version is live. Will probably continue to hack on it
but it seems to be stable enough for regular use. At some point
will try to make the timezone configurable; would be nice to
see posts dated relative to poster's location. Thanks to gorf
for beta testing.
Thu, 16 Oct 2025 @ 02:22 UTC (#4)
Found a relatively simple way to allow deleting or replacing
existing posts via a special query string prefix. Works with or
without IP/PIN restrictions. Will clean up the code a bit more
then move it here.
Tue, 14 Oct 2025 @ 03:55 UTC (#3)
Went off on a tangent while playing around with conditional
string concatenation in AWK. To up the challenge tried making a
script that generates the basic unix file perms (rwx) which
uses some clever math such that various summations of 0-7
control the perms assigned. Turned out to be harder than I
thought but I definitely learned some new tricks.
Fri, 10 Oct 2025 @ 01:08 UTC (#2)
Okay, have something that appears to allow both IP and
passphrase/PIN restricted posting. It seems to mostly work;
only unauthorized posting occurred accidentally when backing
through session history in client, a common issue.
Wed, 08 Oct 2025 @ 22:19 UTC (#1)
First post! Basically the idea is to create a self-contained
tiny phlog script, like bottlechat, but re-configured as a
simple Internet log with posts restricted in some manner,
either by IP or perhaps via some sort of passphrase.
