@protonprivacy @mullvadnet I had decided long ago not to use VPNs on Android because it didn't actually help. Connecting to the onion network and using Tor tools does kind of help but only solves half of the problem. far better to work from Linux instead of Android where you have the option but in my case that means not using the cell phone for that particular traffic or anything that requires real security.

@protonprivacy I am concerned about those proposals that require a centralization of intellectual property and identity. Because governments are not well known for keeping those kinds of things secure or preventing them from being misused. Even the distributed solutions that only have the machine reporting the age group of the user account is problematic. Because then the machine becomes a beacon telling all of the predators that here is a potential victim. That may be security for the web portals, but it's certainly NOT security for the children! I get the feeling that the people who write these prospective laws never asked any independent security personnel. (The likelihood is that every one of those proposals was written by a lobbyist with a vested interest.) they seem to take the security onus from the web service site and put it in the wind. Making a change that does away with any sense of security whatsoever.

@gamingonlinux So if I understand this correctly, the politicians are requiring that every operating system be able to report to the predators whose accounts represent a vulnerable juvenile potential victim? And parents think this is a good idea?

@gamingonlinux that, of course, only applies to developers who are developing Steam games. A different kind of link should be in your signature if you're developing for any kind of platform. But missing that chance at free advertising on correspondence that was going anyway seems unwise A wasted opportunity.

@protonprivacy the both parts bother me. The first is for those laws that require you to submit an ID and probably a government ID that identifies you absolutely and that goes into a database. How many databases with IP information have not been broken into in the last decade? That's a much smaller number than the number of ones that have not been broken into. But then the second part is when you use a computer anytime you connect to something or get a service from something, it gets to say, hey, are you a juvenile and it gets an answer. So the predators know exactly where the next victim is. Sure, the honest services can protect those potential victims. But how good a job have they done of that already? If that was a priority, and if any of them, even one, was really good at that job of protecting the potential victims, we wouldn't be considering these laws to begin with. This is a plan that's likely to generate a feeding frenzy!

@protonprivacy I once used a wifi password "If Y0u Will Excus3 Th3 Temp0ral Ambiguity". None of your passwords have embedded white space, and they are arguably not long enough. If one must use passwords, it makes sense to use the most complex ones one can and still record or remember them properly.

@Simx72 @nemo @protonprivacy there are no unbreakable passwords. There are just passwords that take more time to break than the access is worth. And when the new wave of quantum computing gets going, we may have the ability to break the most complex passwords in minutes instead of months. This is why two-factor authentication and large, complex, passkeys that are cryptographically complex have become normal.

@protonprivacy Clarify: Reliance on big tech is not only a liability for Europe. Reliance on U.S. big tech is a liability for U.S. citizens as well. And really, it kind of has been since the advent of big oil! (not saying those two are connected, but those two are a little bit connected.)

@fdroidorg I was using Neo Store. I shut it down overnight and started it back up this morning and I don't get the error now. Just in case I also installed F-Doid Classic client. My current suspicion is that the problem was either the client or my device, not really the server, but I can't actually verify that. If mine was the only device that threw that error, that would solidify my suspicion, and if you haven't heard other complaints I find that pretty convincing. And if it was just me, we don't need to worry about it anymore.

@fdroidorg I am confused by that line R is for release. Yes it is, but RC is for release candidate, which means it's not a release yet. So, what are we talking about there?
