Building lots of Linux packages sure makes you notice some weird things. Like why does the KDE screenshot tool spectacle depend on OpenCV (a computer vision library that also pulls in numpy)? Because its image resize function produces nicer results than Qt. https://invent.kde.org/plasma/spectacle/-/merge_requests/340 🙃

Oh nice! The developers of Little Snitch have made a version for Linux. Like they say at the start of the post, I never found an alternative I was happy with when I switched from macOS to Linux. Although, with vastly more open-source software in my workflow it was also less necessary. https://obdev.at/blog/little-snitch-for-linux/#Linux

Making progress! Installed Casuarina on my desktop, now to build Mercury, then Prince. If that works (it should) then I can do my job from this install next week.#CasuarinaLinux

In Nov 2024 a popular cafe in town closed due to increasing financial pressures, culminating in "a significant rent hike". The space they were in has remained empty to this day. I hope the greedy landlord is happy with their actions. It brings me a bit of dark satisfaction to know they have received zero rent in that time.

I successfully worked from Casuarina Linux last week. Today I've been working on getting COSMIC packaged. I didn't realise how many (mostly window management) things COSMIC gets right, and I miss in GNOME. Interestingly this seems to be more prominent when I'm using a big display. On my laptop GNOME was fine.I just got my first successful COSMIC session. There's still some things to fix, in particular the screenshot utility, which is why this is a photo of my display.#CasuarinaLinux #COSMIC

TIL via the @oxidecomputer and Friends podcast that ZFS contains a Lua interpreter that runs in-kernel.https://openzfs.github.io/openzfs-docs/man/master/8/zfs-program.8.html#ZFS

Re: https://bitbang.social/@CursiveHello/116487007762641142I like what GNOME Console (https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/console) does with the cursor. It blinks for a few seconds after movement ends. Then stops blinking until something moves it again.

My reward for getting both our printers working on Casuarina today. No thanks to Xprinter (my label printer manufacturer) for distributing their driver as a rar file with a .deb inside. Which meant `rar` -> `deb` -> data.tar.xz -> finally PPDs and filter binaries. That was fun to package.#CasuarinaLinux

@decryption I built https://rsspls.7bit.org/ for that, and I use it for a handful of sites. Works for sites that send you actual HTML, and not a ball of JavaScript.

I patiently awaited the arrival of Fedora 44, as they had put work into a better out of the box experience on Snapdragon X ARM laptops². I tried it over the weekend… and it didn't work. First I had to discover that you have to manually edit the kernel command line in grub¹ to have any chance of it booting, but even after multiple attempts it never got further than a few systemd boot messages. So the Yoga 7x goes back in the corner again. ¹ https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Snapdragon_WoA_Laptop_Install² https://www.phoronix.com/news/Fedora-44-ARM-OOTB

Dunno wtf is up with my Mastodon instance. The media use has shot up recently. Last week it was at around 70Gb, now it's somehow at 180Gb. It's a managed instance that's getting expensive to run. Plans for self-hosting are now in motion.

What on earth!? Docs say to install curl _and_ wget then proceed to do basically the same thing except one uses curl and the other wget.

RE: https://mastodon.decentralised.social/@casuarina/116598058876532008After many months work I'm pleased to have finally published the Casuarina Linux website and initial ISO. There's still things to improve, but it's been my daily driver for a while now. The next major project is packaging COSMIC desktop. I have it mostly working (I'm using it right now), but there are some things to fix before it can be merged.See the intro post for more details: https://casuarina.org/news/introducing-casuarina-linux/#CasuarinaLinuxRT: https://mastodon.decentralised.social/ap/users/116261822701041091/statuses/116598058876532008

@bugaevc Yes this is what I did, but it feels like something common enough to be built in (like BSD make, cargo, meson, etc). Plus that only works on Linux.
