Okay, so: Peer Support is a thing. It's not widely known, and it's IMPORTANT. A Peer Support Specialist reaches across, not down. Non-hierarchical-- that's literally a requirement spelled out in the job description. We close the liminal space between "patient" and "well person". We bridge the gap between the person receiving care and their therapist/doctor etc. We're the people you want knocking on the door when you're having a major personal crisis-- you know, instead of the people with guns. We've lived through our own crises/trauma/illness/addiction/etc, and we know how it actually feels. This isn't just some cute hand-holding role. It's a crucial part of a larger movement to integrate and humanize-- frankly, to TRANSFORM-- healthcare. That's the agenda, straight up. And I even get to fucking SAY THAT out loud. And how do we enact this subversive scheme? By using empathy to relate to people, while helping empower them to determine and work on their OWN damn recovery goals, without judging. Trying to "fix" people leads to burnout. Coercion and punishment have diminishing returns-- you can't force anybody to get better by kicking them when they're already down. Stigma has done massive damage. So we slow down, give an actual shit, and walk WITH people while they learn to fish, instead of beating fish over their heads, get it? I post some heavy shit. But there's a very good reason I have so little patience with the horrible crap going on all around us: Solutions exist. All of the energy and resources being poured into endless war right now, need to be aimed instead towards projects like this.It is possible to rehabilitate large-scale ecosystems. Enough carbon could be sequestered this way, to actually return us to pre-Industrial levels.I grew up with my father, an engineer, constantly explaining in detail the short-sighted flaws in how many things are done all around us, and how it could be fixed by people willing to do things the right way. This is why I'm so fired up. We can do so much better than the pathetic fate we're expected to resign ourselves to. The Paris Accords don't come close. The oh-so-greenwashed infrastructure act and inflation reduction act are laughable next to the scale of what needs to be done. People who promote net zero scams and blather about tech miracles are dodging the issue and wasting our time. They think 3C increase is acceptable. They will let us burn. They are liars who want you to believe I'm trying to discourage you by pointing out the flaws in what's happening. The opposite is true.Solutions exist. There is hope.Corporate toadies of the fossil fuel industry don't want us to realize it-- nothing else is so dangerous to the tyranny of the status quo, as the realization that solutions exist. It's an enormous job, but we CAN do it if enough resources are directed the right way.And every little bit counts.Your yard, your neighbor's yard, the median, the ditch, empty lots-- anywhere. Everywhere. Build topsoil. Like our lives depend on it. They do. Build connections, trust, friendships. Repair things. Find people with good hearts, people who are building something real. Trying to follow up on damage control from getting scammed the other day and I have zero chill, everything is making me cry.Can we have back menus with numbers and buttons?? No matter how mindlessly friendly this thing tries to sound, it never understands a word I'm saying and it's so emblematic of everything going wrong right now I want to strangle it.

The technofascists were never going to sit idly by and let the biggest collective repository of information just run around un-enshittified. For almost two decades, I have been amazed at how well Wikipedia has been doing, and dreading the inevitable attacks. We've seen this pattern playing out many, many many times now. Reddit's board was colonized around 2015, for one example. Everyone can see Mozilla going down the tubes with leadership actively trying to destroy anything that could make it a good and open alternative to the megacorps browsers. The people with backgrounds in venture capital or Microsoft or Amazon etc etc moving in on good sites and services, changing the priorities, letting the poison in. Evil, making offers people can't refuse, throwing around endless money and let's face it threats too, put NOTHING past them. It's an attack-- this is war. And they're out to eat EVERYTHING. @amenonsen @idzie @CedarTeaAnd all the talk of "efficiency" is honestly batshit when we're talking about disastrously unsustainable farming methods that are wrecking the soil and driving vast amounts of desertification all over the world-- oh, and all while relying on precarious global supply chains consuming staggering amounts of fossil fuels and keeping everybody dependent on shit that comes from places like the Strait of fucked up Hormuz. The gains of the so-called Green Revolution were very temporary. Concentrated fertilizer salts and tilling do nothing to replenish the humus or maintain healthy soil structure, leading to incredible waste, pollution, and erosion.Efficient, my ass.

@earthworm @amenonsen @idzie @CedarTea One of the first things I learned when I started looking up permaculture videos, is that even in the biggest agricultural schools, soil science is a shockingly neglected afterthought. Hardly anyone is bothering to study it in any serious way. Next to hundreds of agriculture majors with other focuses there might be 20 students majoring in soil. The big corporations fixate on the short-term gains made by the chemicals and machines they sell, and that's it. How the complex ecosystems actually work, the long-term viability of it and so on, is just not relevant to how they think. If there's a deficiency or whatever they think they can just throw some other potion in there and fix it with simplistic blunt force. It's completely bonkers, because soil is the foundation of ALL LIFE on Earth that's above water. And then we also have situations where, for instance, a UofO student whose thesis project found that the timber companies' replanting methods were doing more harm than good, gets KICKED OUT of the university because Weyerhauser is one of the school's biggest investors and doesn't want the bad press. That kind of shit. They just try to erase the evidence of their mistakes so they can keep on fucking up no matter what it means for the longevity of their own industry much less humanity in general.

@carapaceWas just reading in another thread that land degredation accounts for about 30% of the extra C02 in the atmosphere (possibly more).Rebuilding topsoil should humanity's top priority right now.

@carapaceThe Dust Bowl is what got me. Realizing that the richest topsoils on earth, 12+ inches deep, don't just up and inexplicably blow away one day due to a bit of drought.The bison. The beavers. The forests. And THEN the plough, on top of it all. The landscape has been massively transformed. In my region the water table is down something like 800ft from where it used to be. People can't expect changes this massive to not have devastating consequences.But it's fixable. Permaculture before and after videos totally changed my outlook on our entire situation. The fact such projects aren't getting the kind of investment data centers do, tells us everything we need to know about who's running the world right now.
